Men's Lacrosse Closes Regular Season with 30-8 Victory at Guilford
GREENSBORO, N.C. --- Roanoke jumped out to a 17-4 halftime lead and cruised to a 30-8 win on the road at Guilford Wednesday afternoon. The Maroons finish the regular season with a 12-3 record, including the programs' third-straight undefeated record (7-0) in conference play. The Quakers are now 9-7, 2-5 in the ODAC.
The Maroons, who clinched home-field advantage throughout the conference tournament, won their 20th-straight conference game. It's the second-longest conference win-streak behind Roanoke's run of 27-straight from 1981-89. RC is now 28-2 against Guilford, with a 20-game series win-streak.
The game belonged to the ODAC regular season champions, winning big on the stat sheet. They held advantages in shots (57-23), shots on goal (43-15), face-offs (31-of-40) and groundballs (33-13). The Maroons were 4-of-5 in man-up opportunities while successful in 13-of-15 clears.
It took six Roanoke goals before Guilford got on the scoreboard with 5:43 left in the first quarter. The Maroons went on to score 13 of the next 16 goals of the contest to as Mike Hayden's man-up goal capped the run to make it, 19-4 with 14:41 in the third.
Guilford managed to produce four of the next five goals over the next 10-minutes of play to make it, 20-8. The Maroons, who are sixth in the nation in scoring, had the final 10 goals of the contest to give them their highest scoring total of the season.
Roanoke had 15 different players score in the win, led by Hayden and Jeff Keating with three goals and three assists each. Joey Coretti, Richard Lachlan, Ty Roselli and Stephen Degenhardt each had three goals each in the regular season finale.
Justin Tuma had three goals and won 25-of-29 face-offs for the Maroons. Jules Klose won 6-of-9 face-offs in the fourth quarter, collected five groundballs and totaled a goal and an assist. Tyler Cockey added to the offensive outburst with two goals, while Dominic Gurnsey had a goal and two assists.
Charles Pease (8-2) earned the win in goal for the Maroons, collected three saves. Mike Hardon had three saves in relief followed by Keenan Miller with one in the final period.
The men will await their upcoming opponent in the ODAC Semifinals as the Maroons earned a #1 seed and a first round bye. Game is scheduled for Saturday, April 30 at Kerr Stadium.
