Lachlan Nets Eight Goals in 25-5 Victory over Colorado College in First Round of NCAA Tournament
SALEM,Va. --- Sophomore attack Richard Lachlan (Port Coquitlam, B.C., Terry Fox Secondary) tied a school post-season record with eight goals to lead #7 Roanoke to a 25-5 victory over Colorado College Wednesday evening at Kerr Stadium. The Maroons, who advance to the second round of the NCAA Div. III Tournament, improve to 15-3. The Tigers, who made their first post-season appearance, ended the season with a school-record of 15-1.
Roanoke, which is riding a 10-game win-streak, posted tournament school-records of most goals (25), largest margin of victory (+20) while Lachlan tied Jon Mason's single-game goals record which he set back in 2007 against Widener.
The Maroons snapped the Tigers school-record 18-game win-streak and their perfect season. They did so by blanking them, 11-0 in the second-half to secure the victory. RC is now 3-0 against CC, outscoring them, 73-18.
Improving their record to 7-2 at home this spring, the Maroons post a 14-2 mark in the post-season, including a 5-1 record in the NCAA Tournament. They are also 4-0 in the month of May.
Lachlan rattled off five first-quarter goals to give the Maroons the 5-2 advantage after 15-minutes of action. That momentum carried over to his teammates, outscoring their opponent, 9-3 in the second period to give them a commanding 14-5 halftime lead.
Jeff Keating (Chatham, NJ, Chatham) scored a goal and dished out three assists in a six-goal third stanza as the Maroons were in the midst of scoring the final 13 goals of the contest. Roanoke put CC away for good in the final period, scoring five additional unanswered goals.
Keating finished with eight points (3g, 5a) which puts him 15th on the career scoring list with 183 points. Lachlan joined the 100-point club with a bang, as his eight goals propel him to 38th on the career scoring list.
Justin Tuma (Bloomfield Hills, MI, Lahser) finished the night winning 14-of-17 face-offs and collected 10 groundballs to give him the single-season record in that category. Mike Hayden (Vienna, VA, James Madison HS) finished with three goals and three assists followed by Conner DuBois (Lititz, PA, Manheim Township), who totaled two goals and three assists.
Charles Pease (Landisville, PA, Hempfield) (11-2) finished the evening with eight saves and three groundballs for Roanoke. Alex Burkhead (Winston-Salem, NC, Forsyth Country Day) collected six groundballs and caused three turnovers.
James Mauk led CC with three goals, including two in the first quarter. Jeff Steedman (15-1) had 18 saves in goal for the Tigers.
The men will host Gettysburg College in the second round of the national tournament Saturday, May 14 at Kerr Stadium. The Bullets (12-6) defeated Scranton, 8-3 earlier today. The series is tied 5-5, with three of the final four meetings decided by a single goal. The Maroons won the last meeting, 11-10 in overtime of last spring's NCAA Second Round contest. Game time is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
