Men's Lacrosse Season Ends in National Semifinals with 16-7 loss at #1 Salisbury
SALISBURY, Md. --- Roanoke fell behind early and was unable to recover in a 16-7 defeat at #1 Salisbury in the NCAA Div. III Semifinals at Sea Gull Stadium Sunday afternoon. The Maroons, who played in their ninth national semifinal, finished the season, 17-4.

The Maroons, ranked seventh in the USILA Top-20 poll, completed its third-straight season with at least 17 wins, an undefeated conference record (7-0 ODAC) and an NCAA Tournament appearance. They earned an automatic bid after claiming a second-consecutive ODAC Tournament Championship against Lynchburg, 12-10.

Salisbury (20-1) will play for its ninth national championship on Sunday, May 29 at 7 p.m. against defending national champion, #5 Tufts (19-2). Salisbury, the top-seed in this year's NCAA Tournament, advanced to its 13th national title game. The Sea Gulls won its 16th Capital Athletic Conference Championship as the Sea Gulls avenged their only loss to then #1 Stevenson (W, 16-14) en route to their 33rd NCAA Tournament appearance.

The Sea Gulls are now 17-8 all-time against the Maroons, including a 5-0 mark in post-season play. Roanoke, making its 23rd NCAA Tournament appearance, is 0-3 against Salisbury in national semifinal match-ups. Jim Berkman is 15-1 against Roanoke in his 23 years as head coach at SU.

After 10 minutes of scoreless play, the Sea Gulls tallied the game's first two goals to take the early lead with four-minutes remaining in the opening period. After gaining possession nearly a minute later, Roanoke called a time-out with 2:06 remaining in the quarter. During the time-out, officials flagged a member of the Maroons for an illegal stick, handing SU a three-minute man-up advantage.

Salisbury took full advantage as four of the next five goals were man-up and took a 7-0 lead with 13:02 remaining. Matt Cannone scored his second goal of the contest a minute later to take a commanding 8-0 lead.

Jeff Keating (Chatham, NJ, Chatham) stopped the bleeding with a goal around the crease with 10:14 left in the second quarter and Justin Tuma (Bloomfield Hills, MI, Lahser) had a rebound shot that found twine to cut it to 9-2.

After Roanoke saw its deficit increase to 11 in the third, Richard Lachlan (Port Coquitlam, B.C., Terry Fox Secondary) sparked a four-goal run with two of his own over a seven-minute span to cut it to 13-6 with 3:35 left in the period.

But Salisbury owned the fourth quarter, scoring three of the final four goals and maintained possession for most of the final 15 minutes of play.

Keating and Lachlan led Roanoke with two goals each. Justin Tuma finished with a goal and an assist in addition to eight groundballs.

Roanoke goalkeeper Charles Pease (Landisville, PA, Hempfield) finished with seven saves in nearly 54 minutes of action, with Mike Hardon (Devon, PA, The Gunnery) recording six minutes of playing time and staving off one Salisbury shot.

Cannone led the way in the contest for Salisbury with a game-high six points on three goals and three assists. Krum (four goals) and Mendes (3 g, 1a) finished with four points, while Quist (2 g, 1a) followed shortly behind with three points.
