Men's Lacrosse Rolls to 16-5 Victory over Christopher Newport in Non-Conference Action
SALEM --- Roanoke jumped out to an 8-0 first quarter lead and never trailed as they cruised to a 16-5 victory over Christopher Newport in non-conference action Wednesday evening at Kerr Stadium. The Maroons, ranked #13 in the country, improve to 6-3 on the season, while the Captains slip to 3-5.

Roanoke, who has scored eight first quarter goals in back-to-back games, was led by Joey Coretti with a season-best six goals and one assist. Reid Mayberry tallied three goals and an assist for four points on the night for his third hat trick of the season.
The Maroons led the Captains in shots (45-33), groundballs (47-41) and forced 31 turnovers while 24-of-25 in clear attempts. CNU won 18-of-25 face-offs in a game that was played in a downpour in the second half.

Coretti, Mayberry and Jeff Keating combined for seven of the first 10 unanswered goals of the game in the first 18-minutes of the game. CNU stopped the bleeding with back-to-back goals from John Thompson to make it, 10-2 with 10:45 go to in the first half.

Roanoke responded with a 5-0 run with Coretti leading the charge with three goals during that span to take a 15-2 lead with 5:13 left in the third to put the game away.

Jeff Keating, who scored three points (2g, 1a) on the night, which gives him 227 career points, seventh all-time at Roanoke. He trails Kris Davis '04 by two points for sixth on that list. Mike Hayden (2g, 1a) tallied three points on the night while Conner DuBois and Dennis Chichkin added a goal and assist apiece. DuBois also collected a team-best six groundballs.

Mike Hardon (2-0) earned his second win of the season for the Maroons, stopping 13 shots and scooping five groundballs. Charles Pease had two saves in four minutes of action. Eric DeLong had five groundballs as Brayden Gerrie and Kyle Smith each totaled four.
Thompson led CNU with three goals while Ari Elgort won 18 face-offs and collected 11 groundballs. Andy McGregor took the loss in goal with seven saves. Mark Hargrove totaled five saves in the second half.

The men will travel to Virginia Beach to take on Virginia Wesleyan in conference action Saturday, March 31. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
