Roanoke Escapes Washington and Lee with 14-12 Victory in Men's Lacrosse Action
LEXINGTON- Roanoke senior midfielder Jeff Keating scored three goals and assisted on four others as the 13th-ranked Maroons defeated Washington and Lee, 14-12, in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's lacrosse action on Wednesday evening at Wilson Field. The Maroons, winners of four-straight, improved to 8-3 overall, 3-1 in the ODAC. The Generals slipped to 6-7, 2-3 in conference play.

The Maroons jumped out to a 3-1 lead following the first period on the strength of two goals by senior Joey Coretti, both of which were assisted by Keating.

Luke Heinsohn and Mac Means scored for W&L to cut the deficit to 4-3 with 9:50 to play in the second quarter, but a trio of Maroon goals over the next 3:41 stretched the Roanoke lead out to 7-3 with 6:09 left in the half.

The Generals ended the second quarter with three of the game's next four goals, including man-up goals 13 seconds apart by senior midfielder Sam Mott and Means, both assisted by Scott Meehan, to make it, 8-6 at the break.

W&L opened the second half scoring when Heinsohn tallied a score just 1:27 into the third period, but the Maroons responded with a fast-break goal by Brian Ingold just 1:20 later for a 9-7 lead. First-year midfielder Garrett Paglia found rope unassisted at 7:25, but Roanoke used a three-goal run for a 12-8 with 2:10 left in the third stanza.

Jack Switala scored man-up from Cameron Dabir with 38-seconds left in the third period and Meehan scored unassisted at 13:07 of the fourth period to make it a 12-10 game.

The Generals would get no closer than two goals the rest of the way, however, as Keating scored twice in the final 11:22 to hold off W&L and give Roanoke its fourth-straight win in the series.

For the game, Roanoke held a slight 38-37 edge in shots and a 35-34 advantage in ground balls. W&L won 20-of-30 face-offs led by Jared Mitchell, who took every draw for the Generals.

Meehan led the W&L offense with one goal and four assists, while Dabir had two goals and one assist. Switala, Mott, Means and Heinsohn added two goals each. Warren Berenis played all 60 minutes in goal and recorded eight saves.

Keating paced Roanoke before being ejected for multiple unsportsmanlike conduct penalties with nine seconds remaining in the contest. Mike Hayden logged two goals and one assist, while Coretti, Ingold and Reid Mayberry all scored two goals.

Brayden Gerrie collected four groundballs and caused three turnovers while Conner DuBois scooped up five with a goal for the Maroons.
