Maroons Roll in 15-2 Victory over Southwestern in Final Game of Spring Break Trip
GEORGETOWN, TX - The Roanoke College men's lacrosse team rolled in a 15-2 victory over Southwestern University in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon.  The Maroons now have a record of 2-2, while the Pirates sit with a mark of 3-2.
 
The Maroons started scoring within the first minute of the game, as Spencer Parsons netted an unassisted goal at the 14:13 mark to give the Maroons a 1-0 advantage.  Less than a minute later Chad Smith took a pass from Kevin Jackson and placed it in the back of the net for the 2-0 lead.  With 9:48 to play in the first quarter, Cameron Linsley scored an unassisted goal to put the Maroons ahead 3-0.  Within the next two minutes, Colin Mackenzie and Kevin Jackson each scored again for the Maroons as Roanoke went up by five with 7:14 to play in the period.  In the final minute of the frame, Southwestern scored a goal by Matt Zagurski, assisted by Jeremy Tufnell, putting the Pirates on the board, 5-1 at the end of the first quarter.
 
Scoring was scarce in the second quarter as each team potted one goal during the period.  At 6:41 Kevin Jackson scored his second goal of the game, while Tyler Downing tallied a goal for the Pirates with 1:42 remaining.  At halftime, Roanoke led Southwestern 6-2.
 
In the entire second half, Roanoke held Southwestern scoreless.  The Maroons scored five goals in the third quarter, all by different players.  Colin Mackenzie scored his second goal of the game with an assist from McWilliams in the first 30 seconds of the quarter.  Just seven seconds later, McWilliams netted his own goal off of a pass from Will Pilat.  Chad Smith scored his second of the game at 12:11 in the third, unassisted.  Pilat got in on the action at 10:49, scoring off a pass from McWilliams.  Kevin Jackson closed out the scoring at 5:19 in the third with an unassisted goal, as the Maroons entered the fourth quarter with a 11-2 lead.
 
In the fourth quarter the Maroons scored four goals.  McWillams scored the first at 13:45, his second goal of the game.  Nick Wolf slipped two past the keeper during the quarter, the first at 9:28, and the second with 43 seconds to play, assisted by  Nick Wolf.  Dale Smith scored for the Maroons as well, netting an unassisted goal at the 2:11 mark.  As the horn sounded, the Maroons were victorious over the Pirates, 15-2.
 
Kevin Jackson led the Maroons with three goals, while also tallying one assist.  He also tied Joey Dishaw for a team high four ground balls in the contest.  Colin Mackenzie, Tyler McWilliams, Chad Smith and Nick Wolf all finished the game with two goals each.  McWilliams led in points (5) as well as assists (3) for the afternoon.  Charles Pease picked up the win, playing 45 minutes in goal, tallying five saves.
 
Matt Zagurski and Tyler Downing each finished with one goal for the Pirates, while Jeremy Tufnell tallied the lone assist on the afternoon.  Daniel Ayala led the squad with eight ground balls, as well as two forced turnovers.  Daniel Donovan was tabbed with the loss, giving up three goals in six minutes, making one save.
 
The Maroons led in numerous statistical categories including shots (55-11), faceoffs (11-7), and ground balls (47-29).  The Pirates led in successful clears (23-17) and saves (16-6).
 
The Maroons return to action in the Roanoke Valley on Saturday, March 8th as they welcome #15 ranked Dickinson College to Kerr Stadium.  That contest is scheduled for a 2:00 PM start.
