Maroons Battle Quakers to Tight 8-7 Victory
SALEM – The Roanoke College men's lacrosse team battled ODAC opponent Guilford College to a tight 8-7 win on Wednesday evening.  The Maroons now have a record of 7-3, 3-0 in the ODAC, while the Quakers have a 5-3 0-3 record in ODAC play.
 
The Maroons are starting ODAC season with a conference record of 3-0.  Roanoke has started five of its last six seasons 3-0 in the conference play.
 
Play started out slow in the first quarter as both teams were defensively strong in the period.  The Quakers came away with the only goal of the first frame as Andrew McDonagh scored at 8:45 on an unassisted goal.
 
Guilford scored the first goal of the second quarter at 10:21 as Daniel Hughley scored in the final second of a man-up situation.  Roanoke's Steven Jackson scored just 14 seconds later to pull the Maroons back within one, 2-1.  Two minutes later, Guilford's Rufus Terry tallied an unassisted goal for Guilford's third of the day.  The Maroons charged back over the next seven minutes.  Kevin Jackson scored off of a Josh Sibio pass to cut the deficit to one.  Colin Mackenzie scored the equalizer at 2:35 on an unassisted goal, tying the game at 3-3.  Less than a minute later, Clarke Lewis also scored an unassisted goal, giving the Maroons their first lead of the game.  Guilford's Duncan Fitzgerald scored with 29 seconds to play to tie the game at 4-4 entering halftime.
 
The Maroons and Quakers scored two each in the third quarter, entering the final period with a score of 6-6.  Tyler McWilliams and Will Pilat scored each of the Maroons' goals in the third.  In the fourth, the teams played a scoreless first 10 minutes until Kevin Jackson scored an unassisted goal with 5:20 to play.  Guilford's Hughey scored with 2:36 on the clock to tie the game at 7-7.  McWilliams score Roanoke's go-ahead goal with 1:47 to play.  Guilford continued to attack in the final two minutes, even taking a shot with 2.7 on the clock, but a late save by Pease sealed the victory for the Maroons.
 
Roanoke was led in scoring by Tyler McWilliams and Kevin Jackson, who tallied two goals apiece.  Four other Maroons tied with one goal each.  The Maroons had three assists, one each from McWilliams, Joey Dishaw and Josh Sibio.  James Fisher led the team in ground balls with 10.  Charles Pease played all 60 minutes between the pipes and tallied eight saves.
 
The Quakers were led in scoring by Daniel Hughey, who finished with two goals on the night.  Guilford had two assists, one apiece from Dylan Haupt and Josh Shipman.  Nick Huckins led the team in ground balls with six, followed by Juquan Tellis with five.
 
The Maroons led the Quakers in faceoff wins, 16-3, as well as shots (41-28) and ground balls (46-41).
 
The Maroons return to action on Saturday, March 29th as they take on Washington and Lee on the road, who received votes in the latest USILA poll.  That contest is scheduled for a 1:00 PM start.
