Men's Lacrosse Falls to Hampden-Sydney in Overtime of ODAC Semifinals
SALEM – The Roanoke College men's lacrosse team fell to Hampden-Sydney 14-13 in overtime of the 2014 ODAC Men's Lacrosse Tournament Semifinal game on Saturday. #4 seed Hampden-Sydney advances in the tournament with a mark of 10-7, while the #1 seed Maroons have a record of 12-5.

Hampden-Sydney advances to the ODAC Championship game at 2:00 PM on Sunday at Kerr Stadium, facing off against #3 seed Lynchburg College. Lynchburg defeated #2 seed Washington and Lee in the second game on Saturday evening. The Maroons now wait until Sunday night at 10 PM for the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Selection show to see if they will receive an at-large bid for the NCAA Tournament.

Joey Dishaw and Will Pilat led the team with two goals each, while nine other players finished with one goal each. Tyler McWilliams led the team in assists, dishing out three, as Michael Lintner followed suit with the team's remaining two assists. Max Kraus, who went 19-23 in face-offs, led the team in ground balls, snatching up seven. Charles Pease played 61 minutes in goal, tallying 10 saves in the Roanoke loss.

Hampden-Sydney was led in scoring by Abbot Wallenborn and Jake Koferl, who each netted four goals on the afternoon. Duncan Morris was third on the team with three goals. Mike Funk dished out a team high three assists. The Tigers' Ned Bowden led the squad with seven ground balls, while Casey Bendall finished with five. David Noftsinger played 60 minutes in goal and picked up 12 saves.

In the deciding overtime period, Roanoke won the face-off, immediately taking a time-out to set up a play. The Maroons were able to get two shots off out of the time out, but neither found the back of the net. Hampden-Sydney gained possession and marched down to the other side of the field, taking a time out. About a minute after the break, the Tigers' James Hughes took a pass from Thomas Armstrong, and slipped it past the keeper for the deciding goal with 1:56 to play.

The Tigers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on the Maroons in the first quarter, with Jake Koferl, Duncan Morris and Abbot Wallenborn each netting a goal in the first seven minutes. Roanoke responded at 6:50 with its first goal from Clarke Lewis, who scored unassisted. Josh Sibio added his own unassisted goal at 4:49, pulling the Maroons within one, 3-2. Koferl scored one more for the Tigers with six seconds on the clock in the first quarter, as Hampden-Sydney took a 4-2 lead after the first.

Koferl netted his third to open the second quarter, taking a three-goal lead. But, it was just eight seconds later when a goal by Will Pilat started a six goal run through the remainder of the first half. 20 seconds after Pilat's goal, Joey Dishaw scored off of a pass from Michael Lintner, pulling the Maroons within one. Marquis Terrell tied the game for the Maroons with an assist from Lintner, knotting the game at 5-5. At 11:18, Tyler McWilliams gave the Maroons their first lead of the game on an unassisted goal. In the final two minutes of the half, both Kevin Jackson and Will Pilat each tallied a goal, giving the Maroons a three goal, 8-5 lead entering the half.

To start the third half, Roanoke scored its seventh consecutive goal when Chad Smith found the back of the net at 11:23. Koferl scored his fourth goal at 9:16, putting a halt to the Maroons 7-0 run. Two minutes later, James Hughes scored a goal to get Hampden-Sydney back within two goals. The final goal of the quarter came as Colin Rossano converted a pass from McWilliams into Roanoke's 10th goal of the game. After three quarters, Roanoke led 10-7 over the Tigers.

Will Carter opened the fourth quarter with an unassisted goal, putting the Maroons ahead by four, 11-7. Starting at 8:28, Hampden-Sydney outscored Roanoke 4-1, with Abbot Wallenborn scoring two of the Tigers' four goals. With 6:20 to play, Roanoke held a 12-11 lead. With 5:44 to play, Dishaw scored to widen the lead to two goals. Duncan Morris scored with 2:05 to play in the fourth to cut the deficit to one. The equalizer came at 1:26 when Abbot Wallenborn scored a man-up goal off of an assist from Mike Funk to tie the game at 13-13, sending the game to overtime.

Roanoke led in numerous statistical categories on the day including: shots (43-34), ground balls (48-36) and face-offs won (22-7). Hampden-Sydney led in shots on goal (24-23) and clears (22-18).
