#17 Maroons Edged By Sewanee In Men's Lacrosse Action on Saturday
SEWANEE, TN – The #17 ranked Roanoke College men's lacrosse team fell in non-conference action to Sewanee University 10-9 on Saturday afternoon.  The Maroons have opened the season with a record of 1-1, while the Tigers have gotten off to a 2-0 start, having previously defeated future Roanoke opponent Colorado College.

Joey Dishaw scored the first goal of the game just two minutes into the contest, slipping one past the goaile with an assist from Colin Mackenzie.  The tigers quickly responded with a goal of their own as Robbie Berndt notched an unassisted goal 30 seconds later.  Not to be outdone, Kevin Jackson reclaimed the lead for the Maroons 11 seconds after the Sewanee goal, taking an assist from Chad Smith and giving Roanoke a 2-1 advantage.  Will Pilat scored his first goal of the game at the 6:16 mark, as Mackenzie picked up his second assist of the day.  Exactly a minute after the last goal, Tyler McWilliams scored a man-up goal for the Maroons, assisted by Jackson.  After the first quarter of play, Roanoke led 4-1.

Sewanee and Roanoke scored three goals each in the second quarter.  After Sewanee scored the initial goal of the quarter, McWilliams scored the first goal for the Maroons, playing off of  a pass from Pilat.  The Tigers went on and scored two consecutive goals before Pilat scored a man-up goal of his own, assisted by IV Stucker.  Dishaw capped the final goal of the quarter, scoring unassisted with 1:10 to play, giving Roanoke a 7-4 advantage.

Sewanee made a major run in the third quarter.  Chad Smith scored at the 10:39 mark, unassisted, but that would be Roanoke's only goal of the period.  Sewanee went on to score five unanswered goals during the period.  George Bukawyn scored the first two goals, the second of which was a man-up opportunity.  Cotter Brown, Peter Brown and Joe Randazzo scored the other three goals for the Tigers in the final five minutes of the quarter.  With 15 minutes left to play, Roanoke trailed by one, 9-8.

The two teams played to a scoreless first 12 minutes of the period.  Sewanee was the first team to put one between the pipes, as Robbie Berndt scored unassisted with 2:24 to play.  Five seconds after Berndt's goal, Roanoke's Conn Curry scored off of a pass from Dishaw, bringing the Maroons back within one goal, 10-9.  Roanoke won the faceoff after the goal, lost the ball, but got it back after a penalty.  Roanoke took two more shots in the closing seconds of the contest, but neither would prove to be the equalizer, as #17 Roanoke fell on the road to Sewanee on Saturday.

Tyler McWilliams, Joey Dishaw and Will Pilat led the team in scoring with two goals each, while Corin Curry, Kevin Jackson and Chad Smith notched one goal each.  Colin Mackenzie dished a team-high two assists in the contest, with five other players tallying one apiece.  Jackson also led the team in ground balls, picking up six in the game.  Julian Taylor was second on the squad in ground balls with three, while Troy Grogan had a team high two forced turnovers.  Dylan Torrey (1-1) played all 60 minutes between the pipes, tallying 12 saves.

Sewanee also saw three players finish with two goals apiece, with tallies coming from Cotter Brown, Robbie Berndt and George Bukawyn.  Stewart Roddey and Hayden Byrd finished with three ground balls each.  Hal Smith was the lone face off man for Sewanee, winning 7 of his 22 attempts.  Selby Austin (2-0) also played a complete game, making 17 saves on 26 shots.

Sewanee held the advantage in shots (52-46), ground balls (25-24) and saves (17-12).  Roanoke won 15 face offs, with Cam Linsley and Max Kraus each winning seven starts.  Each team had 19 successful clears, and Sewanee led in man-up goals, 3-2.

The Maroons return to action on Wednesday, March 4th as they travel to take on now #10 ranked York College of Pennsylvania.  That contest is scheduled for a 3:00 PM start.
