Maroons Fall to #5 Stevenson, 11-8 on Saturday
SALEM – The Roanoke College men's lacrosse team ran into #5 Stevenson on Saturday, taking a 11-8 loss to the #5 ranked team in the country.  The Maroons are now 2-2 on the season, while the Mustangs are 3-1 for the year.

Roanoke is currently 2-1 against ranked teams in the USILA poll.  The Maroons opened the season with a 13-11 win over #16 Denison University in the confines of Kerr Stadium.  The Maroons also traveled to take on York on March 4th and defeated the #6 ranked team with a 10-7 victory.  If the current teams on Roanoke's schedule stay in the USILA polls, Roanoke's next ranked opponent will be Ohio Wesleyan on March 24th, in a rescheduled game from earlier in the season.

Stevenson's Stephen Banick got the scoring started for the Mustangs, scoring an unassisted goal at the 12:18 mark of the first quarter.  Roanoke responded by scoring on back to back man-up opportunities.  IV Stucker scored the initial goal for the Maroons at 10:26, taking an assist from Tyler McWilliams.  Kevin Jackson scored to take a 2-1 lead at 7:31 in the first, finding the back of the net off of a pass from Daniel Kravit.  The Mustangs put up two goals over the next two minutes, including caps from Banick and Matt Tompkins, reclaiming a 3-2 advantage.  Roanoke and Stevenson traded multiple goals over the final four minutes of the quarter.  Colin Mackenzie tied the game at 3-3, scoring an unassisted goal at 4:10.  After another Mustang goal, Jackson knotted the game up at 4-4 with 2:29 to play.  Stevenson's Billy Burgoyne scored in the final two minutes to go ahead by one, but Will Pilat scored the equalizer at 1:02 off of a pass from Jackson.  At the end of the first 15 minutes, the two teams were tied at 5-5.

The Mustangs held the Maroons scoreless in the second quarter, while scoring two goals of their own.  Goals came from Kyle D'Onofrio and Ryan Kirby, with assists from Banick and Tony Rossi, respectively.  At the half, Roanoke trailed Stevenson, 7-5.

Tyler McWilliams opened the third quarter with a goal, assisted by Will Pilat, getting the Maroons back within one goal, 7-6.  However, Stevenson scored three unanswered goals to finish the third quarter with a 10-6 advantage.  The McWilliams/Pilat pair scored again as McWilliams slipped a goal past the keeper with 9:59 to play in the game, cutting the deficit to three, 10-7.  Stevenson's D'Onofrio scored less than two minutes later to widen the lead to four again, 11-7.  Conn Curry netted the final goal of the game for the Maroons with 3:55 to play.  Roanoke continued to battle until the end, taking three shots in the final 30 seconds, but the Stevenson lead was too large as the Maroons fell 11-8 to #5 Stevenson.

Roanoke finished with eight goals on the afternoon, led by Tyler McWilliams and Kevin Jackson with two goals apiece.  Will Pilat also finished with one goal and two assists, leading all Maroons in the assist category.  Roanoke tallied 34 ground balls in the contest, with Julian Taylor leading the squad with five ground balls, while Joey Dishaw picked up four.  Iles Mitchell, Max Kraus and Wes Pancoast each finished the game with three ground balls.  Kevin Jackson led the team in forced turnovers with two, while eight other Maroons tallied one each.  Dylan Torrey (2-2) played the complete game in the goal, making 20 saves on 31 shots faced.  Max Kraus won six of 11 face-off opportunities to lead the team in the category.

Stevenson's Kyle D'Onofrio was the top scorer for the Mustangs, putting away three goals.  Stephen Bankick led the team in total points, finishing with two goals and two assists.  Paul Danko put up a team high 11 shots, with the team taking a total of 58 attempts.  Callum Robinson led all players in the game with nine ground balls, while Justin Buonomo had six, the second most on the day.  Robinson also forced five turnovers on defense.  Ben Richards also played a complete game in net, making 14 saves.  Justin Buonomo led the Mustangs in the face-off category, winning 11 of 19.

Stevenson outshot the Maroons 58-32, while the Mustangs also led in ground balls 40-24.  Roanoke held Stevenson scoreless during man-up opportunities, but the Maroons converted on just 2-7 for the day.
