Maroons Rally In Fourth To Defeat Hampden-Sydney, 11-10
SALEM – The Roanoke College men's lacrosse team rallied in the fourth quarter, scoring five goals in the final period to defeat Hampden-Sydney 11-10 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play on Saturday.  The Maroons now have a record of 5-2, 2-0 in the ODAC, while the Tigers are now 3-4, 1-1 in ODAC play.

The Maroons entered the contest looking to avenge their loss to the Tigers in the semi-finals of the 2014 ODAC Tournament, where Roanoke fell 14-13 to Hampden-Sydney in overtime.  Roanoke started the week having received votes in the latest USILA Week Four poll.  The Maroons are currently on a three game win streak, and are going to play three ranked teams in the next five games.

Roanoke had a tough time against Hampden-Sydney in the opening quarter, as the Tigers blanked the Maroons in the first 15 minutes of play.  Hampden-Sydney scored three goals in the first quarter, with one each from Duncan Morris, Thomas Armstrong and Ian Levin.

The Maroons started to turn the contest around in the second quarter as Will Pilat scored at the 12:29 mark in the period, fielding an assist from Tyler McWilliams.  The Tigers scored back to back goals, both by James Hughes, over the next 40 seconds to widen their lead to four goals, 5-1.  Roanoke closed out the half with two goals, one from Austin Nader at 4:23, the other from Joey Dishaw with 1:57 to play.  Roanoke trailed by two, 5-3 entering halftime.

Hampden-Sydney looked as they were creating separation from the Maroons in the third quarter, scoring the first two goals of the period.  Thomas Armstrong scored his second at the 11:10 mark, assited by Jake Koferl.  Duncan Morris scored his second as well for the Tigers, increasing the team's lead over the Maroons by four, 7-3.  Roanoke started to take charge after Morris' goal, as Kevin Jackson tallied an unassisted goal at 3:41.  Two minutes later, Tyler McWilliams scored his first of the game, bringing the Maroons within two, 7-5.  Reid Kaminski scored quickly after McWilliams' goal, getting the Maroons within one to enter the fourth quarter.

The Tigers started the fourth as they had the third, with two consecutive goals.  Mike Funk and James Hughes scored one goal each in the first five minutes of the quarter to build the Tiger lead to three goals, 9-6.  At the 9:00 mark, McWilliams scored his second goal of the game on a man-up opportunity, unassisted.  Less than two minutes later, Conn Curry scored an unassisted goal of his own, cutting the deficit to one.  Just 25 seconds later, Joey Dishaw tied the game with a goal from a pass by McWilliams, tying the game at 9-9.  Dishaw tallied the game-winner at 4:04 when he fielded a pass from Kevin Jackson, putting the Maroons up by one.  Jackson created more separation with an unassisted goal at 2:59, taking an 11-9 lead.  Hampden-Sydney's Abbot Wallenborn potted a goal for the Tigers at the 2:11 mark, but Roanoke was able to fend off the Tigers for the remainder of the contest, picking up the 11-10 victory.

The Maroons were led in scoring on Saturday by Joey Dishaw, tallying three goals in the victory.  He finished with eight shots, four of which were on goal.  Tyler McWilliams and Kevin Jackson scored two goals each for Roanoke, while McWilliams finished with two assists to Jackson's one.  The Maroons finished with 30 ground balls, led by Max Kraus with five, while Conn Curry picked up four.  Roanoke also forced 11 turnovers, led by Iles Mitchell with three. Dylan Torrey played another complete game in net, facing 18 shots and fending off eight of them.  Max Kraus won nine faceoffs for Roanoke, while Curry, Linsley and Kaminski won one each.

The Tigers were led in scoring by James Hughes with three goals, followed by Thomas Armstrong and Duncan Morris with two apiece.  Jake Koferl tallied three assists on the day, leading all players in the category.  The Tigers had 28 ground balls, led by Koferl with five, followed by David Noftsinger with three.  Noftsinger played all 60 minutes between the pipes, tallying 16 saves.

The Maroons outshot the Tigers 57-29 over the course of the contest.  Roanoke also led in ground balls 30-28, and the teams were equal with one man-up goal apiece.

The Maroons return to action on Tuesday, March 24th as they play host to #8 ranked Ohio Wesleyan at Kerr Stadium.  That contest is scheduled for a 3:00 PM start.
