Maroons Fall to LC in Top-20 Men's Lacrosse Matchup
LYNCHBURG, Va. --- Roanoke College ran into a hot squad in the form of Lynchburg College on Saturday evening as the visiting Maroons fell to the Hornets, 13-6, in a national top-20 matchup.  Roanoke now owns a 6-4 overall record and a 3-1 mark in league play, while Lynchburg moves to 6-2 and 2-0 with its third straight win.

Both the Maroons and Hornets entered the contest ranked in the top-20 nationally by both the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) and Lacrosse Magazine (LM Ranks).  RC is ranked 19th by the USILA and 20th by LM Ranks in their latest polls, while LC sits eighth and seventh, respectively.

Lynchburg scored the first six goals of the game, shutting out the Maroons in the opening period.  LC led 2-0 after the first 15 minutes of action, getting unassisted tallies from Todd Galvin and Sean Ahern, the latter coming via a man-up opportunity.

Colin McGuire took a pass from Galvin with 11:39 on the second quarter clock for a 3-0 advantage.  Luke Ernst and Austin Stewart followed with unassisted goals before McGuire and Galvin hooked up for a second time with 6:28 to go, again taking advantage of a man-up chance.

Roanoke got on the scoreboard with 5:28 showing as Will Pilat deposited one past the LC keeper.  That marked the final goal of the second period, sending the squads to the intermission with LC on top, 6-1.

The Hornets struck for two quick goals at the outset of the third period, both coming with the Hornets a man short.  Aaron Murphy scored off a dish from Hunter Thompson, while Stewart notched his second tally at the 14:10 mark.

Roanoke looked to turn the tide as Kevin Jackson scored off a feed from Cameron Linsley, but it started a trend of traded goals.  Jacob Fuller followed with an assisted goal for LC with 10:52 on the clock, but Steven Jackson answered for Roanoke with an unaided goal two minutes later.  Lynchburg got the final goal of the quarter as Murphy scored with 1:22 to go, giving LC a 10-3 lead after three frames.

Stewart and Murphy made it 11-3 LC a little over a minute into the fourth period, followed by a third Hornet man-down goal as Galvin scored off a pass from Ernst.

Roanoke put together its first back-to-back efforts of the contest with two goals in quick succession.  Tyler McWilliams scored unassisted at 12:16, taking advantage of a man-up opportunity.  Pilat followed just 29-seconds later to pull RC to within 12-5.
 
Galvin regained an eight-goal lead at the 8:47 mark, but the game's final tally went to Roanoke.  Colin Mackenzie fed Kevin Jackson for his second goal of the contest, capping the game's scoring with 7:46 to play.

Kevin Jackson and Pilat led Roanoke with two goals apiece.  Dylan Torrey put in a full 60-minute shift between the pipes, making 10 saves against 23 total shots on-goal.  Conn Curry led the defensive unit with three caused turnovers.  Wes Pancoast had a team-best four ground balls.  Linsley was 5-for-10 on face-offs, while Max Kraus was 4-for-10.

Galvin led all players with five points on three goals and two assists.  Stewart added three tallies, while McGuire and Murphy scored twice.  Chris Hawley spent all 60 minutes guarding LC's cage, making seven saves.  Thompson and Cullan Ganley caused two turnovers apiece, while Bobby Distler picked up a game-best five ground balls.  Distler was 13-for-22 as the Hornets' lone face-off man.

Roanoke returns to action on Saturday, April 4, as the Maroons welcome Virginia Wesleyan College to Salem for an ODAC matchup.  Game time is set for 2:00 p.m. in Kerr Stadium.
