Men's Lacrosse Falls to Virginia Wesleyan, 17-15 on Saturday
SALEM – The Roanoke College men's lacrosse team fell to Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon, 17-15 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action.  The Maroons now have a record of 6-5, 3-2 in the ODAC, while the Marlins are 7-3, 4-0 in ODAC play.

The two teams battled back and forth throughout the contest, tying in the first, second and fourth quarters.  The Marlins, however, found the edge in the third quarter, outscoring the Maroons 6-4.

Virginia Wesleyan build an early 3-0 lead over the Maroons, as John Roth, Josh Currier and Levi Whitney all scored in the first five minutes of the period.  Will Pilat put the Maroons on the board with an unassisted goal at the 9:08 mark.  Wesleyan put up two more goals, one from Matt Baldwin, the other was a man-up goal by Joe Papetti.  Trailing 5-1 with 4:06 to play, Roanoke rattled off a 4-0 run to close the first half.  Tyler McWilliams scored back to back goals in a 15 second span, the second earning an assist for Pilat.  IV Stucker scored his first of the game at the 2:23 mark on a man-up opportunity.  Roanoke's final goal of the period came from Colin Mackenzie, taking a pass from Kevin Jackson with nine seconds left, scoring the man-up goal.  After the first period, Roanoke and Virginia Wesleyan were tied 5-5.

Will Pilat scored just seconds into the second quarter, picking up an assist for Max Kraus, taking the Maroons first lead of the game, 6-5.  Virginia Wesleyan put in two more goals from Mike Moran and Joe Couture by the 12:27 mark.  IV Stucker potted his second of the game at 9:46, tying the game at 7-7.  Chad Smith scored less than a minute later to take the 8-7 lead off of a pass from Seth Fortmann.  The Marlins' Currier scored two goals to reclaim the lead for VWC.  Trailing by one, Austin Nader, with the help of Julian Taylor, scored at the halftime buzzer to tie the game at 9-9 at the midway point.

Conn Curry and Hayden Miller scored in the first five minutes of the third quarter, putting Roanoke ahead by two goals, 11-9.  After another Currier goal for VWC, Will Pilat scored his third to keep the Maroon lead at two goals.  Starting at the 8:40 mark, the Marlins strung together three goals, including another two from Currier, reclaiming the Va. Wesleyan lead, 13-12.  Pilat found the back of the net again, tying the game at 13-13 with 3:47 left in the quarter.  However, the Marlins closed the quarter with two goals, the last from Pappeti on a man-up goal, to lead 15-13 entering the final quarter.

Just four goals were scored in the final frame, with Currier scoring once more for VWC with 13:27 to lead by three, 16-13.  After nine scoreless minutes, Conn Curry tallied an unassisted goal, cutting the deficit to two.  At 3:31, Mike Moran scored for VWC, pushing the lead back to three.  Roanoke's final goal came from Tyler McWilliams, assisted by Will Pilat with 1:31 to play.  Roanoke fell less than two minutes later to ODAC opponent, Virginia Wesleyan 17-15.

The Maroons were led in scoring by Will Pilat, finishing the game with four goals.  Pilat also tallied a team-high two assists.  Tyler McWilliams finished with three goals, while Conn Curry and IV Stucker netted two each.  Max Kraus led the team in ground balls with eight, while going 21-32 during faceoffs.  Cameron Linsley was a perfect 3-3 on faceoff wins.  Dylan Torrey played all 60 minutes and made nine saves.

The Marlins saw seven goals from Josh Currier, who also dished out one assist.  Mike Moran scored three goals, while Joe Papetti finished with two.  Cory Hilliard led the team with two assists.  Currier picked up a team-high seven ground balls.

Roanoke won the face-off battle, 24-11.  Roanoke also outshot the Marlins 59-39, as well as picking up more ground balls (45-38).  The Maroons went 3-4 on man-up opportunities, while also having 19 successful clears.

The Maroons return to action on Wednesday, April 8th as they play host to Washington & Lee at Kerr Stadium.  That contest is scheduled for a 7:00 PM start.
