Maroons Defeat Generals 6-4 on Wednesday

Maroons Defeat Generals 6-4 on Wednesday
SALEM – The Roanoke College men's lacrosse team defeated Washington & Lee, 6-4 on Wednesday evening.  The Maroons now have a record of 7-5, 4-2 in the ODAC, while the Generals are 8-6, 3-3 in ODAC play.

The Maroons get back on the winning track after having lost two in a row.  The Maroons have a 4-2 record over the Generals in the last six meetings, with Washington & Lee having won the previous matchup in 2014.  Roanoke also gets a win over a team who received votes in the latest USILA Poll, as Washington & Lee is one of three teams in the ODAC to do so in the past week.

This was a highly defensive game for both teams, as Roanoke tied its lowest goal total for a game this season, while the Generals' four goals is their lowest point total this season.  Roanoke scored two goals in the first quarter.  Joey Dishaw, back from injury, scored the Maroons first goal of the game at the 9:50 mark.  Steven Jackson also tallied a goal in the first, potting one at 6:58.

The Generals cut their deficit to one in the second quarter, when Jonathan Henry tallied a goal with an assist from Garrett Paglia at the 8:31 mark.  A minute later, Kevin Jackson found the back of the net to build the Maroons' lead back to two, 3-1.  Just before the end of the first half, W&L's Joe Perrella notched an unassisted goal.  After 30 minutes of play, Roanoke led 3-2.

Roanoke scored right off of the opening faceoff in the third period, as Conn Curry picked up the ground ball, dished it off to Will Pilat for the Maroons' fourth goal.  Another 11 scoreless minutes passed before Kevin Jackson scored his second of the game, assisted by IV Stucker, building the Maroon lead to three, 5-2.  The Generals tallied another last minute goal in the third quarter, as Christian Zanetis slipped a shot past the keeper with 54 seconds to play.  After three, Roanoke led 5-3.

Joey Dishaw scored his second of the game in the first minute of the fourth quarter, putting the Maroons up by three, 6-3.  The Generals scored one more goal at the 6:10 mark, as Alex Owen scored off of a pass from Zanetis.  Roanoke held W&L at bay for the remainder of the contest, as the Maroons picked up the ODAC victory, 6-4.

Kevin Jackson and Joey Dishaw led the Maroons in scoring with two goals each.  They also lead the team in points.  IV Stucker and Conn Curry tallied one assist each in the contest.  Curry and Wes Pancoast topped the team with five ground balls each, while Robby Moore led the squad in forced turnovers with two.  Dylan Torrey played the complete game with 11 saves in 60 minutes of play.

The Generals had four players tally one goal each to lead the squad in the category.  Garrett Paglia and Christian Zanetis finished with one assist each. Colin Frasier led the team with six ground balls, while Conor O'Toole led the team in forced turnovers with two.  Wyatt Devine also played the complete game between the pipes, tallying 11 saves.

The Generals outshot the Maroons 40-29, as well as winning eight of the 14 face offs during the game.  Roanoke was successful on one of three man-up opportunities and tallied 19 of 20 clears.  The two teams tied in ground balls with 29 each.

The Maroons return to action on Saturday, April 11th as they host Shenandoah during Alumni Weekend at Roanoke College.  That contest is slated for a 2:00 PM start.
