The Lead: The No. 5 seed Roanoke men's lacrosse team used a big second quarter to overcome an early deficit to get a 12-10 win over No. 4 seed Randolph-Macon in the quarterfinals of the 2023 ODAC Men's Lacrosse Tournament in Ashland.

How it Happened/Highlights:

  • The two teams traded goals early with R-MC scoring first at 11:56 and the Maroons getting a goal from Luke Kammerman less than a minute later to level the game. The two teams would trade goals again with the Maroons getting a goal from Wyatt Whitlow, off an assist from Julian Kammerman, before the Yellow Jackets would score the final two goals of the first quarter to take a 4-2 lead after the first 15 minutes.
  • It did not take long for Sean Kennedy to bring the Maroons within one with an unassisted goal at 14:19. After the Maroons took a time-out with just under 13 minutes left in the first half, Roanoke made the most of the opportunity with Whitlow's second goal, from J. Kammerman, to tie the game up at 4-4. It was just seven seconds later that Brooks Klyver won the ensuing faceoff ran down and scored a goal that gave the Maroons their first lead of the game. The Yellow Jackets followed up with their own quick goal just 10 seconds after Klyver's goal to tie the game up at 5-5.
  • It was a brother-to-brother goal for the Maroons at 6:20 with Luke scoring his second goal, on a man-up opportunity, off a pass from brother Julian at 6:20. The goal gave the Maroons the lead once again at 6-5, a lead they would not give up the rest of the game. Ethan Caldwell scored with just over three minutes left before halftime with Macon answering at 1:35 to pull within one, 7-6, at the break.
  • The Maroons would lead by as many as three in the third quarter with goals from DJ Nolan (10:35, assist by Weston Hammond), Luca Docking (3:12, unassisted), and J. Kammerman (0:38, unassisted) as Roanoke led 10-8 going into the fourth quarter.
  • The Yellow Jackets pulled within one at 11:34, but Caldwell answered just over a minute later with his second goal of the night off a pass from L. Kammerman to put the Maroons back on top at 10:11. With just 44 seconds remaining, Macon found the back of the cage to once again get within one, but the Maroons won the ensuing faceoff and L. Kammerman was able to snag a ball out of the air and fire a goal with just 19 seconds left to give the Maroons an insurance goal as Roanoke held on for the 12-10 win.
  • L. Kammerman led the Maroons with three goals and an assist as part of eight different Roanoke players with a goal.
  • Alex Feuer had the team-high in ground balls with five with both Carson Peck and Nolan each recording four. Feuer also made 15 saves in goal.
