Defense Puts up fourth-straight shutout against Randolph, 2-0

Lynchburg, Va. --- The Roanoke College defense put together yet another shutout effort in its 2-0 win at Randolph College on Wednesday afternoon. The Maroons improved to 9-3-1 overall and 5-1 in the ODAC. The Wildcats dropped to 7-7, 4-3 in the conference.
The Roanoke defense earned its fourth-consecutive shutout and their fifth in the last six outings. Overall, this unit has a total of eight shutouts on the season. Cameron Lee, Michael Stark and Ben Freeman, along with others had an outstanding day in the backfield and are a major part in this year's success. The men are ranked 12th in the nation in goals against average.
The defense seems to look a bit like the 2004 unit that put up 10 shutouts on the year, including four-in-a-row.
Matt Standley's header off an assist from Michael Walter got the Maroons on the board in with two minutes remaining in the half. It was Standley's first goal of the season.
In the second half with eight minutes remaining, Chris Collins scored from 12-yards out off Taylor Johnston's third assist of the season to give the Maroons an insurance goal to seal their fifth ODAC win.
The Maroons outshot the Wildcats, 16-8 with an 11-4 advantage on shots on goal. They also had a 7-2 edge on corner kicks. Aaron Humphreys finished with nine saves for Randolph. Adam Thompson, who credited himself with his seventh shutout effort of the season, wound up with four saves for Roanoke.
The men will return home for its final home stand of the season as they open Saturday, Oct. 18 against ODAC-foe Hampden-Sydney. The Maroons hold a 24-9-2 series advantage against the Tigers and will look to avenge a 4-1 road loss last season. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
