Roanoke Roars past Wildcats, 4-0 in Men's Soccer
SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke built a 2-0 halftime lead and cruised to a 4-0 win over Randolph College in ODAC men's soccer action at Kerr Stadium Wednesday evening. The win improved the Maroons record to 10-3-2 overall, 6-0 in the ODAC. The Wildcats dropped to 3-8-3, 2-3-2 in the conference.
The Maroons out-shot the Wildcats, 28-7, including a 12-3 advantage in shots on goal. Roanoke held a slight edge in corner kicks, 7-5. With the win, the Maroons clinched their eighth 10-win season this decade. It is the 19th 10-win season in the program's 60-plus years at Roanoke, including Scott Allison's 16th in his 24-year career in Salem.
Kayvon Sarmadi (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley)led the Maroons with seven shots, three on goal including a goal in the 55th minute. Zaan Janse (Wellington, New Zealand, Wellington)finished with five shots, two on goal. He also notched a goal and an assist in the win. Jordan Troyer had four shots, three on goal with an assist. Taylor Johnston (Charleston, WV, Capital)had three shots, one on goal with a goal along with an assist.
Janse struck first in the fifth minute of action off an assist from Johnston to make it, 1-0. It was his fourth goal of the season, including his second game-winner.
Janse returned the favor, as he assisted Johnston in the 31st minute to give the Maroons a 2-0 advantage. It was Janse's first assist of the year while Johnston tallied his fourth goal of the season.
In the second half, Sarmadi scored his eighth goal of the season off an assist from Jordan Troyer to make it, 3-0 just nine minutes into the second half. Troyer's shot was blocked followed by Jon Marc Winchester's. But he found the loose ball then forwarded it up to Sarmadi as he poked it into the left side.
Tim Dunn (Towson, MD, Towson)finished the Wildcats off by scoring off a penalty kick with four minutes remaining to give the final result. It was his second goal of the season.
Ryan Russell (Danville, VA, GW Danville)finished with three saves in goal for the Maroons, notching his fifth shutout of the season. Randolph's Aaron Humphreys totaled six saves on the night.
The men will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 17 as they take on Lynchburg College in what is a match to claim the first spot atop the ODAC standings. The Hornets are currently 11-1-1, 5-0-1 against ODAC competition this season. The Maroons hold a 34-15-6 all-time advantage against LC. Scott Allison holds a 24-2-1 record against the Hornets and hasn't lost to them since 1987. Last meeting was a 1-1 decision in Lynchburg last October. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
