Men's Tennis Goes 1-2 in Hilton Head Trip to Open 2010 Season
Hilton Head, SC--- Roanoke men's tennis opened its season last week in South Carolina. They played in three matches, finishing the trip with a record of 1-2. The Maroons defeated St. John Fischer 9-0, but fell to both Mercyhurst (7-2) and Augustanna (5-4).
In the season-opening win against St. John Fischer, Sam Sherrill (Southborough, MA, St. Mark's)and Jon Roy (Greensboro, NC, Grimsley) both cruised to 6-0, 6-1 victories in men's #1 and #2 singles, respectively, while teaming up in #1 doubles to win 9-8, (7-5). Alex Lyons (Topsfield, MA, St. Johns Prep)and Matt Nadolny (Fairfield, CT, Fairfield Ludlowe)combined to win in #2 doubles, 8-0. James Lee (Radnor, PA, Radnor)and Minot Amory (Palm Beach, FL, Canterbury)took the #3 doubles match, 8-1.
The 9-0 team win was the first match sweep since April 3, 2009 when the Maroons defeated Randolph College.
In the team's second match, doubles partners Sherrill and Roy up-ended Mercyhursts' #1 tandem of Whittingham and Cotic, 9-8, (7-5). Roy was the only winner for the Maroons in singles action winning 6-3, 6-4 in the #2 slot.
In the final match of the weekend, Roanoke doubles cost the squad a victory as neither pairing could get a victory. Sherrill and Roy had the best chance to pull out a win for the Maroons in #1 doubles but fell 9-8, (12-10) to Augustannas' Adam DeSimone and Chris Mullin.
The Maroons next take the court will be on the road against the Panthers of Ferrum University on March 9th. Start time scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
