Maroons Surrender to Generals; Sting the Wasps and Hornets in Men's Tennis
The Roanoke College Men's tennis team visited Washington & Lee March 11, then hosted to Emory & Henry and Lynchburg College the 17th and 18th.
Jon Roy (Greensboro, NC, Grimsley) and Sam Sherrill (Southborough, MA, St. Mark's) teamed up in men's #1 doubles to clinch the only Roanoke victory in the afternoon against W&L. The tandem defeated Washington & Lee's Tim Watson and Will Hall 8-6 in a hard fought match between the schools two best players. Sherrill was the only Maroon to win a game in singles action as he beat Mac Davis 6-4 in the first game before falling 3-6, 4-10.
The Maroons rebounded later in the week as they flew by the Wasps of Emory and Henry 8-1. Roanoke swept E&H in singles action but not without a fight from the Wasps. Three of the singles match-ups went to a deciding third game. Roanoke's Matthew Delaney (Severna Park, MD, Severn) was victorious in #6 singles as he pushed through Hurley Romaro after falling in the first game 4-6. Sam Sherrill and James Lee (Radnor, PA, Radnor) had to battle in #2 and #3 singles respectively winning in the deciding third game. The Maroons only loss came in #2 doubles as Adam Henderson and Ethan Brooks handled Roanoke's Alex Lyons (Topsfield, MA, St. Johns Prep) and Matt Nadolny (Fairfield, CT, Fairfield Ludlowe) 8-3.
Men's Tennis wrapped up the week with a big ODAC win against rival Lynchburg by a score of 5-4. With the win Roanoke improved to 5-3, 3-1 on the season.
Next up for the Maroons will be the Tigers of Hampden Sydney at home on the 23rd; the match scheduled to start at 3:30.
