Maroons Pick Up a Pair of 3-0 Sweeps Over Hood, Immaculata

The Short Story: The Roanoke College men's volleyball made quick work of host Hood in a 3-0 sweep over the Blazers. Logan Chappell led the Maroons with eight kills, three aces, and two assists as Roanoke returned to even on the season at 3-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first set saw the Blazers win the opening point as the two teams could not find a way to lead by more than one point early on. Trailing by one at 9-8, the Maroons went on a 7-0 run that put them ahead by six at 15-9. After a single point by Hood, Roanoke rallied off six of the next seven to take a 21-11 lead. The Maroons would close out the set with the final point, 25-15.
  • The first few points of the second set was like the first before the Maroons went on an 8-3 run to take a 17-9 lead. Outside of a 3-0 run putting Roanoke up 21-12, the Maroons closed out the second set 25-15.
  • The final set was all Maroons as Roanoke jumped out to a 10-0 lead and did not give up a fourth point to the Blazers until they were up 20-3. The two teams traded points after that mark for the next 10 points with the Maroons claiming the set 25-8 and the match 3-0.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • In addition to Chappell's kills, Cade Kinne finished with seven and Connor Tyson had six.
  • As a team the Maroons had 34 kills on a .393 attack percentage.
  • Davin Stevenson finished the match with his first double-double as he collected 25 assists, 10 assists and six aces.

The Short Story: The Roanoke College men's volleyball went 2-0 on the day with a second 3-0 sweep this time over the Immaculata Mighty Macs. The Maroons finished the match with 45 kills to just 20 for Immaculata. Roanoke was led by Tyson's 10 kills and four aces.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Mighty Macs jumped out early to a 12-5 lead and maintained that until a string of two-for-one points in the Maroons' favor tied the score up at 21-21. Immaculata would take a 23-22 lead before a service error, a kill by Tyson and an ace by Xzaiver Dixson closed out the first set for Roanoke 25-23.
  • The early part of the second set was a reverse of the first with the Maroons taking a 12-7 lead after a 5-0 run. A 5-1 run then allowed the Maroons to take a 17-8 lead before Roanoke closed out the set with another 5-1, 25-13.
  • The third set was once again all Maroons as Roanoke led 13-6 before a pair of Mighty Macs points brought them within five. The Maroons responded with a 7-0 run to jump out to a 20-8 lead and would close out the set with a kill from CJ Kingston, 25-12.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Much like the first match of the day, the Maroons finished with a .376 attack percentage as a team with 45 kills on 93 attempts.
  • In addition to Tyson's 10 kills, both Pierce Faulcon and Dixon finished with nine apiece.
  • Stevenson added 37 more assists and finished the day with 62.
  • Parker Steele had the match-high 17 digs as the Maroons led the Mighty Macs 41-32 in total digs.

  • The Maroons will be back on the road next weekend to take part in the one-day Randolph-Macon Invitational on Saturday, February 4. Roanoke opens with a match against Cal Lutheran at 11 a.m. and follows up with a match against Eastern at 1 p.m.
