Men's Volleyball Splits Matches against Elizabethtown, St. Vincent (Pa.)

The Lead: The Roanoke men's volleyball team fell to Elizabethtown in the first match of two on the afternoon.

Highlights:

  • The Maroons jumped out to an early 6-1 lead over the host Blue Jays before Elizabethtown began to chip away at the lead. The score would get tied up at 16-16. The Maroons saved a match point before the Blue Jays took set one 28-26.
  • Roanoke maintained a lead through most of the second set before the score was tied at 18-18. A 7-1 run by EU would give them a 2-0 set lead with a set two win, 25-19.
  • The Blue Jays jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third set and kept the lead, leading 22-11. A 7-1 run by Roanoke pulled them within five. The two teams then traded points with EU claiming the set 25-20 and the match 3-0.

The Lead: The Maroons split after coming back from a set down against the Bearcats of St. Vincent on Saturday afternoon, 3-2. Roanoke won 15-9 in the fifth.  

Highlights:

  • SVC took an early 5-1 lead against the Maroons and led 10-5 after 15 points. The team would trade points for most of the remaining portion of the first set with the Maroons pulling within three at 21-18. The Bearcats would claim the final two points for a 25-19 set win and 1-0 match lead.
  • After SVC took a 4-2 lead, the Maroons went on a 6-1 run to jump out to an 8-5 lead of their own. Roanoke slowly started to build their lead with SVC pulling within five at 20-15. However, a 5-0 run by the Maroons leveled the match at a set apiece, 1-1.
  • The Maroons would have the lead until midway through the third set with the Bearcats taking a 14-11 lead. A string of small runs allowed SVC to take a 2-1 match lead with a 25-16 set two win.
  • The Bearcats would stake themselves a lead early and maintained it as the Maroons slowly chipped away at it, tying the score up at 20-20. With SVC leading 21-20, the Maroons went on a 3-0 to take a 23-21 lead. Two points later and the score was tied at 23-23. The score would be tied up at 24-24 with the Maroons leveling the match once again, claiming the final two points for the 26-24 set four win.
  • A four-point run by the Maroons was answered immediately with a 3-0 run by SVC to tie the deciding set up at 4-4. With the Bearcats taking a 7-6 lead, the Maroons used another 4-1 run to jump ahead 10-8. After a single SVC point, Roanoke closed out the set and match on a 5-0 run to complete the comeback, 3-2.

Up Next: The Maroons conclude their two-month road trip on Saturday, March 11 when they travel to Southern Virginia for a pair of matches. Roanoke takes on the host Knights at 12 p.m. and then play a neutral site match against the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets at 2:30 p.m. in Buena Vista, Va.
