The Lead: The Roanoke men's volleyball team dropped a three-set match to No. 9 Southern Virginia on the road Saturday afternoon.

  • Once again, the Maroons and Knights were close in the early part of a set before a 6-0 put SVU ahead 16-7. The two teams would trade points until the Knights scored the final four to win the set 25-14 and take a 2-0 set lead.
  • The third set was much of a repeat of the first two early on. SVU used a 4-0 run to expand their lead before it was point-for-point until the end of the set with the Knights claiming a 25-13 set win and the match 3-0.
  • Michael Cummins finished the match with eight kills and five digs to lead the Maroons. Jackson Rutkowski was not far behind with four kills and five digs.

The Basics:
Score:
 Randolph-Macon 3, Roanoke 2
Records: Yellow Jackets 9-9, Maroons 7-10
Location: Buena Vista, Va.

The Lead: Down 2-0, the Roanoke men's volleyball team nearly completed a comeback falling to Randolph-Macon 19-17 in the deciding fifth set on Saturday afternoon.

Highlights:

  • Most of the first set was a back-and-forth contest with the most a team was leading by four with the Yellow Jackets up 15-11. The Maroons pulled within just two points at 21-19 before R-MC went on a 4-0 run to close out the first set.
  • The Yellow Jackets might have led the entire second set, but the Maroons maintained a close score until the end of the set as the Yellow Jackets led 24-18. A quick three-point run by Roanoke brought them within three, but R-MC took a 2-0 set lead after securing their 25th point of the set.
  • The third set was nearly the opposite from the second as the Maroons jumped out to a 6-1 lead on R-MC. The Maroons would lead by as many as six on different occasions throughout the set. The Yellow Jackets would chip away at the lead pulling within one at 22-21 and 23-22, but a kill by Cummins along with a setting error got the Maroons back within a set after a 25-22 set-three win.
  • R-MC led early before the Maroons tied up the score at 6-6 and led by at one point 10-7. The Yellow Jackets would go on a 7-1 run to take a 14-11 lead, but it was then Roaonoke's turn to go on a 7-0 stretch to retake the lead 18-14. It was a lead that the Maroons would not give up as both teams split the final 14 points with Roanoke leveling the match with a 25-11 set four win.
  • The deciding set was a combination of all the back and forth with both teams having early leads and midway ties. The Maroons saved two match points before having their first one at 17-16. Unfortunately, the Yellow Jackets got the final three points to come back and win the set 19-17 and the match 3-2.
  • Cummins added 19 more kills to his day's haul to finish with 27 in the match. Rutkowski also reached double-figure kills with 10.
  • Both Kaeden Noble and CJ Kingston recorded double-figure digs with 18 and 14, respectively.

Up Next: The Maroons will finally return home after a two-month road trip when they Randolph-Macon on Tuesday, March 21. First serve with the Yellow Jackets is scheduled for 7 p.m.
