Maroons Fall in First Match Inside Cregger Center

The Lead: Returning home after a two-month road trip, the Roanoke men's volleyball team hosted Randolph-Macon in a non-conference matchup. The Yellow Jackets escaped the Cregger Center with a 3-1 win over the Maroons on Tuesday evening.

Highlights:

  • Both teams picked up where they left off in their last meeting by keeping the score close throughout the first set. R-MC maintained a two-to-three-point lead through the early part of the first set before pulling away midway through. The Maroons closed the gap to within three at 21-18, but the Yellow Jackets scored two of the final three points for the 25-20 set one win.
  • R-MC won two of the first three points in the second set before Roanoke went on a 4-1 run to take a 6-4 lead which they kept until 10-8. The Yellow Jackets went on a 6-1 to retake the lead 14-11 midway through the set. The teams would trade two points back and forth with R-MC matching the first set with a 25-20 win and a 2-0 set lead.
  • The third set saw both teams unable to take more than a one-point lead on the other until the Yellow Jackets etched ahead 13-9. Trailing 15-12, the Maroons flipped the lead by going on a 6-0 run and forcing a Macon timeout at 18-15. The teams went back to the scoring style of the early portions of the set with the score tied at 22-22. A Macon service error, a Jackson Rutkowski service ace, and a Yellow Jacket attack error clinched the third set for Roanoke, 25-22.
  • The Maroons quickly jumped out in the fourth set 4-0, forcing Macon to take an early timeout. Roanoke would score two more before the Yellow Jackets finally made it to the scoreboard. Macon slowly chipped away at the Maroons' lead before going on a 4-0 run to take a 16-12 lead. A 6-1 run by Roanoke late in the set tied the score at 21-21. The Maroons would save a match point before having two match points of their own before Macon won the final three points for a 29-27 set four win, claiming the match 3-1. 
  • Michael Cummins led Roanoke with 14 kills and six digs. Leo Houser had a team-high 31 assists. 

Up Next: The Maroons will play one more match inside the Bast Center Gym on Saturday, March 25 when they host Marymount in a CVC matchup. First serve with the Saints is scheduled for 1 p.m.
