Maroons Fall to No. 10 Southern Virginia Wednesday Evening

The Lead: The Roanoke men's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 midweek, CVC contest to nationally-ranked No. 10 Southern Virginia on Wednesday evening.

Highlights:

  • The Knights took an early lead in the first set but Roanoke would come back and tie it at 5-5 and 6-6 and keep it close until they tied it again at 18-18. A bad set gave the Maroons their first lead of the set at 19-18, as part of a 3-0 run. A kill by Jackson Rutkowski and a block by Pierce Faulcon put Roanoke ahead 21-19 and the Maroons would force an SVU timeout. Leading again at 23-21, Roanoke gave up two points and called a time-out at 23-23. However, the Knights would finish off a 4-0 run to sneak by with the first set 25-23.
  • With the score tied at 5-5 in the second set, SVU went on a 7-0 to jump ahead before the Maroons responded with a 4-1 run to cut the lead down to four. SVU answered with their own 5-1 run to take a 19-11 lead. The two teams even the rest of the way, scoring back-and-forth with the Knights claiming a 2-0 set lead with a 25-17 win in set two.
  • The third set saw SVU go on several small runs to take an 18-8 lead midway through. The next eight points were split with the Maroons trailing 21-13 with the Knights winning the final four points for the 3-0 match win.
  • Rutkowski led the Maroons with 10 kills while Leo Houser dished out 21 assists. 

Up Next: The Maroons will host a tri-match on Saturday, April 1 when they welcome in both Stevenson and Randolph-Macon. The Maroons start off with a 1 p.m. match against Stevenson before the Mustangs play a neutral match against R-MC at 3 p.m. Roanoke closes out the day against the Yellow Jackets at 5 p.m.
