Maroons Drop A Pair in Saturday Tri-Match

The Lead: The Roanoke men's volleyball team dropped the opening match of a tri-match to Stevenson that also included Randolph-Macon. 

Highlights:

  • The Maroons had a number of leads early on in the first set against Stevenson with the teams trading points and trading leads. With Roanoke leading 8-7, the Mustangs went on a 4-0 to take a three point. Both teams would tally multiple two point stretches with the Mustangs having a 21-16 lead. The Maroons responded by scoring the next four points to pull within one. Down two set points at 24-22, Roanoke cliamed the next two points and tied the score at 25-25 before a pair of Stevenson kills gave the Mustangs the 27-25 set one win.
  • Once again the Maroons had a lead early on before an 8-1 run midway through put Stevenson ahead 19-13. The teams traded small runs before the Mustangs claimed set two 25-20. 
  • Roanoke led by as many as four midway through the third set at 16-12. After trading points again, a 3-0 run by Stevenson and Mustang service error saw the score tied at 20-20. Points went back and forth with the scored tied at 23-23. Two Stevenson points closed out the match with a 25-23 set three win. 
  • The Maroons led Stevenson in kills both the first and third sets and overall in the match (42-41). 
  • Both Michael Cummins and Jackson Rutkowski finished with 13 kills for Roanoke with Rutkowski hitting .458. 
  • Leo Houser had a match-high 37 assists.

Records: Yellow Jackets 14-14, Maroons 7-14
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: For the second match on the day for Roanoke, the Maroons led Randolph-Macon in kills, but dropped a 3-0 match to the Yellow Jackets.

Highlights:

  • Neither team could stake a claim early on to more than a two-point lead. This continued throughout the set with a kill by Cade Kinne brought the Maroons back within one at 21-20. Four straight points by R-MC gave them a set lead, 1-0.
  • Despite the Yellow Jackets taking an early led, Roanoke would respond with a few two point chip-aways to tie the score at 10-10. A 4-0 run by R-MC did not last long as the Maroons tied the second set up at 19-19 on a Connor Tyson kill. It was part of a 3-0 run by the Maroons that included a kill by Kinne and a block assist by Dominic Wheaton and Xzaiver Dixson. The Yellow Jackets answered with a 5-0 run to get set point and they would claim it two points later on a Maroon service error.,
  • The third set went much of the same way of the previous five sets on the day for Roanoke. Much of the set was kept close before R-MC won the final three points for the 25-21 win and the match 3-0. 
  • Kinne and Dixson led the Maroons with nine kills each. Davin Stevenson dished out 28 kills, one more than the entire Yellow Jackets team. 
  • Parker Steele had a match-high 10 digs.
