SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke split with Guilford at the Moyer Complex this evening in both teams' ODAC-opener. The Maroons are now 10-2, 1-1 in the ODAC while the Quakers' record stands at 9-7, 1-1 in the ODAC.
The Maroons, who are 4-1 in one-run games and 2-0 in extra inning games, dropped their first game to Guilford, 7-6. It was not only the first one-run loss of the season, but the first in the series against the Quakers (13-1).
Junior Kelsey Ruitenberg belted a home run in clutch situations in both games to highlight the evening. She went 2-for-2 with two walks, two runs and three RBI in a 7-6 loss in game one.
Lisa Scruggs finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored in the loss while Felice Lowery hit her first homerun of the season going 2-for-4 with two runs. Clarissa Norwich went 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Gretchen Wolfe (3-1) suffered her first loss of the season, striking out three in three innings of work and three earned runs.
In game two, the Maroons won 3-2 in eight innings. Kristin McCormick scored the game-winning run thanks to a Sara Caudle bunt that rolled down the first base line that allowed her to score.
The Maroons went to extra innings thanks to a solo homerun by Lisa Scruggs to dead center to tie the score at 2-2. Ruitenberg hit her second homer of the evening in the fourth inning.
Scruggs went 2-for-3 with her second home run of the season. She finished the night 5-for-7 with three runs and her second career home run. Norwich went the distance as she won her third game of the season with six strikeouts on the night.
The women will travel to Bristol, Va. to play in a non-conference doubleheader against Virginia Intermont. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
