Roanoke Slips Past Virginia Wesleyan, 2-1 in First Game of ODAC Tournament
SALEM, Va. --- Jessica Zeman had a base hit and scored both runs in Roanoke's 2-1 win over Virginia Wesleyan in the first game of the ODAC Tournament this afternoon at the Moyer Complex. The Maroons improved to 24-9 while the Marlins dropped into the loser's bracket with a 25-16 record.
 
A senior from Floyd, Va. Zeman scored the first run of the game in the fourth inning and again in the bottom of the sixth to score the eventual game-winner as Sara Caudle's double play in the top of the seventh sealed the Maroons' first ODAC Tournament win in three seasons.
 
Felice Lowery led the Maroons at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Teammate Lisa Scruggs added another base hit in the win.
 
Kelsey Ruitenberg (9-1) earned the win in relief. Clarissa Norwich went 5.2 innings and struck out four in a no-decision. She helped her cause with an RBI-single in the bottom of the sixth to score the game-winner.
 
Brittany Brown (22-9) took the loss for the Marlins, allowing five hits and struck out six. Mandi Ryan went 2-for-3 with and RBI, scoring teammate Brenae Pettit in the top of the sixth to tie the contest.
 
The Maroons will play against Lynchburg in the winner's bracket at 7 p.m. this evening. The Hornets swept Roanoke this season and defeated Randolph-Macon, 9-4 to advance.
