SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke swept Virginia for the second time this season with scores of 11-6, 7-3 at Moyer Complex Monday afternoon. The win propels the Maroons to 14-1 on the year, while the Cobras dropped to 6-11.

 

The wins improved the Maroons win-streak to 13 games, the longest since the 2008 season (16 games). Roanoke is now, 5-1 against the Cobras.

 

Roanoke got its bats going early, scoring six first-inning runs and jumped out to an 11-1 lead after three innings in game one. Sara Caudle (Irvington, VA, Lancaster)had a three-RBI double in the first and a solo homer in the third to finish with four RBI's. Jessica Zeman (Willis, VA, Floyd Co.)smashed a three-run homer in the second inning and forced a walk for an RBI in the first to finish with four RBI for the game.

 

Gretchen Wolfe (New Windsor, NY, Newburgh Free Academy)(3-0) earned the win, finishing with three strikeouts and one walk in six innings. Abigail Rexrode (Fincastle, VA, James River)earned the save, but the game was ended on a triple-play. Caudle caught a line drive, tagged second and threw back to first to seal the win.

 

The Maroons took game two, 7-3, after starting the same way they did in the first. Roanoke scored four first-inning runs, highlighted by Caudle's second home run of the afternoon, smashing a three-run round tripper to take the 4-0 lead.

 

Hollee Warlitner (Clifton Forge, VA, Alleghany)had her second two-RBI single of the day in the sixth inning to give the Maroons some insurance runs heading into the final frame.

 

Janie Holmes (Hartfield, VA, Middlesex)(2-0) earned the win, going the distance with eight strikeouts, allowing only one walk. Leona Rainey (Sandston, VA, Mills Godwin), this week's ODAC Player of the Week, led Roanoke going 3-for-4 with two runs.

 

The Maroons are on the road this Wednesday, March 17 as they travel to Greensboro, NC to take on ODAC-foe Guilford. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
