Softball Splits ODAC-Opening Doubleheader with Guilford
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Roanoke split with Guilford in ODAC doubleheader action on the road Wednesday afternoon. The Maroons are now, 15-2 overall, 1-1 in the ODAC. The Quakers' record now stands at 15-4-1, 3-1 in conference play.
 
The Maroons are now 14-2 all-time against the Quakers, 2-2 over the last two seasons. The game two loss snapped a 15-game win-streak, which was the longest since the 2006 season.
 
Roanoke jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first inning, en route to a 14-6 game one win. The big first inning in the opener was highlighted with two-run doubles by Jessica Zeman (Willis, VA, Floyd Co.)and Sara Caudle (Irvington, VA, Lancaster). The Quakers answered with six in the bottom of the first on Keys' three-run homer and a two-run blast by Duncan.
 
Roanoke replaced starter Kelsey Ruitenberg (Geneva, IL, Geneva)with Abigail Rexrode (Fincastle, VA, James River)as she held Guilford to just one hit over the next 5.2 innings to earn the save.
 
Lisa Scruggs (Madison Heights, VA, Holy Cross)had career-highs of 4-4 and six RBI along with two doubles and two runs scored two lead the Maroons. Reigning ODAC Hitter of the Week Leona Rainey (Sandston, VA, Mills Godwin)went 3-3 with a career-bests of four runs and three stolen bases.
 
Kimberly Keys went 3-4 with three RBIs and Charissa Duncan hit her second homer of the day in Guilford's 8-4 game two win to salvage the split.
 
Guilford grabbed a 4-0 lead in the first inning of game two as Quakers' starter Shelby Bowser led her team to her team-leading sixth win of the year. Bowser, the reigning ODAC Pitcher of the Week, worked around 11 Roanoke hits, fanned four and did not walk a batter. Duncan hit a two-run homer in the Guilford first and Keys had a three-run double in the four-run fourth frame that opened an 8-1 Guilford lead.
 
Scruggs had three more hits in the nightcap. Meghan Weingard (Bocca Raton, FL, North Broward Prep)delivered a two-run, pinch-hit homer in the seventh. Felice Lowery (Madison Heights, VA, Lynchburg Christian)drove in the other two runs in the third and fifth innings. Lis Norwich (Hegins, PA, Tri-Valley)(2-1) took the loss for the Maroons.
 
The Maroons are back at home on Sunday, March 21 as they host Virginia-Wise. Roanoke is 3-0 against their next opponent, with all three meetings held this season. Game time is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
