Softball Posts Shutout Wins over Virginia-Wise in Doubleheader
DALEVILLE, Va. --- Roanoke swept Virginia-Wise with two shutout victories, 2-0 and 8-0 in five innings on Sunday at Botetourt Sports Complex. The Maroons improved to 17-2 on the season.
 
The Maroons are now 5-0 against UVA-Wise this season, with four of the wins by shutout. They have outscored the Cavaliers, 26-4, and are now 11-0 against non-division III opponents this spring.
 
Kelsey Ruitenberg (Geneva, IL, Geneva)(5-0) earned the 2-0 win in game one, going six innings with four strikeouts in her second shutout effort of the season. Abigail Rexrode (Fincastle, VA, James River)earned her second save of the season.
 
With two outs in the bottom of the fifth and runners on second and third, the Maroons' Lis Norwich (Hegins, PA, Tri-Valley)and Leona Rainey (Sandston, VA, Mills Godwin)scored off a throwing error from Meghan Weingard (Bocca Raton, FL, North Broward Prep)hit. It was all the offense they needed in the game one victory.
 
Rainey went 1-for-3 to keep her 11-game hitting streak alive. Ruitenberg had a single and a walk, as Sara Caudle (Irvington, VA, Lancaster)and Norwich also singled in the win.
 
Rexrode (4-1) earned the win in the 8-0 game two decision over UVA-Wise. She went five innings in a complete game performance with one strikeout. Offensively, the Maroons totaled at least 10 or more hits for the ninth time this season.
 
Hollee Warlitner (Clifton Forge, VA, Alleghany)smashed a two-run homer against the wind to highlight a three-run first inning for the Maroons. In the third, Alea Bier (Bent Mountain, VA, Cave Spring)hit a two-RBI triple to extend Roanoke's lead to 5-0. Rainey's double brought home Bier to give them a six-run advantage.
 
Roanoke put the game away for good in the fifth, as Katherine Kouri (Rockville, VA, Patrick Henry)and Taylor Zahn (Sandston, VA, Mills Godwin)scored to end the game early due to the run rule.
 
Rainey finished 3-for-3 with a double, one run and an RBI. Bier went 2-for-2 with a triple, a run and two RBI.
 
The women will return to action this weekend as they travel to both Virginia Wesleyan (3/27) and Randolph-Macon (3/28) in ODAC action. Game times for both doubleheaders are scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m.
