Roanoke Sweeps EMU in ODAC Doubleheader
SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke swept Eastern Mennonite with scores of 7-0, and 2-1 in ODAC action at the Moyer Complex Wednesday evening. The Maroons improved to 23-4 overall, 7-3 in the ODAC. They Royals fall to 13-12, 4-8 in conference play.
 
The women cruised to a convincing 7-0 game one victory to open the doubleheader. Abigail Rexrode (Fincastle, VA, James River)(6-1) pitched her third complete-game shutout of the season, finishing with six strikeouts and allowed only three hits and one walk. She helped her cause, going 3-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in.
 
Jessica Zeman (Willis, VA, Floyd Co.)went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run, her second of the season. Leona Rainey (Sandston, VA, Mills Godwin)finished 2-for-4 with a run, an RBI and her ODAC-leading 20th stolen base of the season. She is also third in the conference in hits this season.
 
The Maroons opened the game with three-run innings in both the fourth and fifth. Zeman's two-run blast put the nail in the coffin for the Royals, as Rexrode held off the EMU offense for the team's 22nd win of the season.
 
Lisa Scruggs (Madison Heights, VA, Holy Cross)singled and was brought home for the first run of game two after Kelsey Ruitenberg (Geneva, IL, Geneva)reached base off a throwing error from the EMU shortstop to grab the 1-0 lead. EMU tied the contest in the top of the third off a solo home run by Megan Viafora.
 
Hollee Warlitner (Clifton Forge, VA, Alleghany)broke the tie in the bottom of the sixth with a solo shot over the left field fence to make it, 2-1.
 
Rainey went 1-for-2 with a stolen base and a walk. Felice Lowery (Madison Heights, VA, Lynchburg Christian)and Sara Caudle (Irvington, VA, Lancaster)also singled for Roanoke in the win.
 
Lis Norwich (Hegins, PA, Tri-Valley)(4-1) earned the win in her second complete game of the season. She struck out two and allowed two walks while scattering five hits in the contest.
 
The women will return to action this Sunday, April 11 as they host Sweet Briar at the Moyer Complex. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
