Roanokeā??s Bats Come Alive in Sweep Over Sweet Briar

SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke ended both games early in a sweep over Sweet Briar on Sunday afternoon at the Moyer Complex.  The Maroons defeated the Vixens, 10-1 in game one and 18-0 in game two.  The women are now 25-4 overall, 9-3 in the ODAC.

 

With the win, Roanoke eclipsed another milestone. The Maroons won their 25th game in a season for the 12 time in program-history.  The 13 home and nine road wins this season are the most since the 2006 season.

 

Roanoke scored 10 or more runs for the ninth time this season.  Defensively, the Maroons have held their opponents to only two runs, including three shutout wins in the last five games.

 

Abigail Rexrode (Fincastle, VA, James River)(7-1) had three strikeouts with one hit in three innings to earn the win in game one, 10-1.  Gretchen Wolfe (New Windsor, NY, Newburgh Free Academy)struck out two batters and allowed one run in the final two innings in relief.

 

Leona Rainey (Sandston, VA, Mills Godwin)led the Maroons offensively, going 2-for-3 with a double, a run, a stolen base and an RBI.  Lisa Scruggs (Madison Heights, VA, Holy Cross)also had a big game, as she went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one run.  Felice Lowery (Madison Heights, VA, Lynchburg Christian)also went 2-for-3 with a run and a stolen base.

 

The Maroons pounded away 11 hits from eight different players and scored six runs in the first inning to pull away early.  Third Base coach Barry Wood had a season-best six different players with a stolen base.

 

Roanoke scored eight runs in the first inning and six more in the third to cruise to their fourth-straight win, 18-0.  Twelve different players had a base hit, including four with multi-hit games in the Maroons ninth conference victory.  The team pounded away a season-bests 18 runs and 17 hits.

 

Janie Holmes (Hartfield, VA, Middlesex)(4-0) remained perfect this season, going two innings with two strikeouts in an 18-0 win over the Vixens in game two.  Kelsey Ruitenberg (Geneva, IL, Geneva)earned the start, going two innings with three strikeouts while Lis Norwich (Hegins, PA, Tri-Valley)struck out four to close out the game.

 

Sara Caudle (Irvington, VA, Lancaster)had a big game, going 3-for-3 with a home run, a stolen base, two runs and two RBI.  Ruitenberg went 2-for-2 with three RBI and a home run.  Rainey went 2-for-2 with two runs and two runs batted in.  Taylor Zahn (Sandston, VA, Mills Godwin)collected two singles and scored two runs.

 

Beth Nicoll (Fairfax, VA, Fairfax)cleared the bases with a three-RBI single in the third inning while Meghan Weingard (Boca Raton, FL, North Broward Prep)scored twice and had a base hit.

 

The women will travel to play Ferrum in non-conference action on Tuesday, April 13.  The Maroons are 13-9 all-time against the Panthers, in what will be a big south regional contest.  The doubleheader is scheduled for 6 p.m.
