Rainey Named ODAC Softballâ??s Rookie of the Year; Five Make All-Conference Squad
Roanoke Softball had five players represented on the 2010 All-ODAC Team announced this afternoon. Leona Rainey (Sandston, VA, Mills Godwin)took home ODAC Rookie of the Year honors, while earning first-team honors with teammates Lisa Scruggs (Madison Heights, VA, Holy Cross)and Hollee Warlitner (Clifton Forge, VA, Alleghany)Abigail Rexrode (Fincastle, VA, James River)earned second-team recognition while Kelsey Ruitenberg (Geneva, IL, Geneva)was an honorable mention selection.
 
Rainey, a freshman from Sandston, Va., posted a .466 overall batting average while stealing a conference-best 30 bags in 31 attempts.  Against ODAC opponents, Rainey hit .490 with a homer and 17 stolen bases in 18 tries as the Maroons' lead-off hitter.  In the outfield, Rainey made just one error in 40 chances with 36 putouts and three assists.
 
Scruggs slugged her way onto the first-team as a designated player, hitting .379 with four home runs and 26 RBI's. She added 39 hits and scored 19 runs including five doubles in 32 starts this season. Warlitner hit .371 while starting in all 37 games played with 36 hits, including team-bests  of 11 doubles, 20 walks and 34 RBI's while belting five home runs. She scored 27 runs and stole nine bases on the year.
 
Rexrode went 9-4 on the mound in 22 appearances with 12 starts for the Maroons this spring. She totaled five complete games, three shutouts efforts, two saves and struck out a team-best 51 batters in 81 innings of work.
 
Ruitenberg finished her career with four all-conference awards as she capped a brilliant career at Roanoke. At the plate, she batted .351 with five home runs and 22 RBI. She started in 35 of 36 games played while totaling 34 hits, scoring 21 times, four doubles and drew 15 walks. On the mound, she went 8-2 with a 2.36 ERA in 20 appearances making 11 starts. She totaled three complete games and struck out 50 batters in 59.1 innings this spring and set a new single-season record with four saves.
 
Roanoke finished second in the ODAC Standings with a 13-5 mark, 30-9 overall. It is the program's ninth 30-win season in its 14-year history.
