Rainey Named 2010 VaSID State Rookie of the Year
EMORY, Va. --- Freshman Outfielder Leona Rainey (Sandston, VA, Mills Godwin)was named the 2010 VaSID State Rookie of the Year announced this morning. Fellow newcomer Hollee Warlitner (Clifton Forge, VA, Alleghany)earned first-team honors with Rainey while junior Lisa Scruggs (Madison Heights, VA, Holy Cross)garnered second-team recognition.
 
Rainey, a centerfielder, was also voted 2010 ODAC Rookie of the Year following a stellar first-year with the Maroons. She posted a .466 overall batting average while stealing a conference-best 30 bags in 31 attempts. Against ODAC opponents, Rainey hit .490 with a homer and 17 stolen bases in 18 tries as the Maroons' lead-off hitter. In the outfield, Rainey made just one error in 40 chances with 36 putouts and three assists. Rainey broke the single-season stolen bases record and currently sits seventh on the career list.
 
Warlitner, a First-Team All-ODAC selection, hit .371 while starting in all 37 games. She finished the 2010 season with 36 hits, including team-bests  of 11 doubles, 20 walks and 34 RBI's while belting five home runs. She scored 27 runs and stole nine bases on the year.
 
Scruggs, a designated player for the Maroons this past spring, hit .379 with four home runs and 26 RBI's. She added 39 hits and scored 19 runs including five doubles in 32 starts this season.  A First-Team All-ODAC selection, Scruggs made the VaSID All-State team for the first time in her career.
 
Roanoke finished second in the ODAC Standings with a 13-5 mark, 30-9 overall. It is the program's ninth 30-win season in its 14-year history.
