Roanoke Sweeps Guilford in Conference-Opener
SALEM, Va--- Roanoke topped Guilford, 11-3 and 2-1 in it's conference opener Wednesday at the Moyer Sports complex. The Maroons improved to 11-3, 2-0 in ODAC play, while the Quakers fell to 13-7, 1-3 in the conference.

In game one Roanoke jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Leona Rainey (Sandston, VA, Mills Godwin) led off the inning with a walk and then stole second before Hollee Warlitner (Clifton Forge, VA, Alleghany) got the Maroons on the board with an RBI-double. Sara Caudle (Irvington, VA, Lancaster)then drove her in with an RBI-single and scored on a double by Meghan Weingard (Boca Raton, FL, North Broward Prep)

Guilford responded in the top of the second scoring a run off two Roanoke errors. The Maroons piled it on in the bottom half of the second scoring five runs to take an 8-1 lead. Devon Briney (Folsom, CA, Oak Ridge ) hit a two-run single to score Alea Bier (Bent Mountain, VA, Cave Springs) and Rainey. After a walk and a single, Weingard and Felice Lowery (Madison Heights, VA, Lynchburg Christian) hit back-to-back sacrifice flies. Caudle scored on a single by Lis Norwich (Hegins, PA, Tri-Valley) just before the end of the inning.

Rainey added a run in the bottom of the third on a single by Warlitner. Norwich singled in Lowery, who hit her team-best third triple of the year with two outs to push the advantage to 10-1 after four. An RBI-single by Sarah Cutright and a sac-fly by Morgan Andrews cut the lead to 10-3.   The Maroons ended the game on a Warlitner sac-fly that scored Rainey to give the Maroons the 11-3 edge.

Andrews and Cutright paced the Quakers with an RBI and a hit a piece.

Rainey led the Maroons, going 3-for-4 with four runs on the game. Warlitner finished 2-for-2 with three RBI's  and two runs scored. Weingard, Cauddle, and Briney all added two RBI's.

Gretchen Wolfe (New Windsor, NY, Newburgh Free Academy)
improved to 5-2 on the season for the home team. She threw a complete game, allowing no earned runs, while striking out seven and walking just one. Emily Bowser registered the loss for the Quakers, exiting after just one inning.

Game two turned out to be a pitcher's duel between Norwich and Guilford's ace Jessica Burchman. Guilford took the first lead of the ball game off a Roanoke error in the top of the first.  A solo homerun to right field by Lowery in the bottom of the seconds tied things up at one. 

In the bottom of the fifth, Weingard led off the inning with a single and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lowery. Norwich then helped her cause on the mound with an RBI-double to left field to give the Maroons a 2-1 lead and the final score.  

Norwich earned her third victory of the season for the Maroons, throwing a complete game. She allowed no earned runs, three hits, and struck out nine on the evening. Burchman took the loss on the mound for the Quakers.
