Softball Sweeps Meredith to Extend Winning-Streak to 13
RALEIGH, NC --- Roanoke swept Meredith, 10-2 (5 inn) and 11-4 in non-conference action Sunday afternoon. The Maroons improved to 17-3 on the season while the Avenging Angels slipped to 6-12.
 
The win extends the Maroons winning-streak to 13-straight this spring. Roanoke is now 8-1 against Meredith, winning seven-straight in the series. The women are also 6-0 on the road this season.
 
Roanoke scored eight of their 10 runs in the first three innings to cruise to a 10-2 victory in five innings in game one. Gretchen Wolfe (New Windsor, NY, Newburgh Free Academy) (4-2) earned the win in a complete game effort, striking out four batters and allowed only two runs.
 
With a 1-0 lead in the second, Hollee Warlitner (Clifton Forge, VA, Alleghany) RBI-single scored both Alea Bier (Bent Mountain, VA, Cave Springs) and Leona Rainey (Sandston, VA, Mills Godwin) to extend Roanoke's lead to three. The Maroons scored five runs in the third to give them a comfortable 8-0 lead and held off the Angels defensively for the win.
 
Warlitner and Stephanie Clark (Nathalle, VA, Halifax)collected two hits each with Warlitner driving in two runs. Rainey scored twice while Bier crossed home plate a game-high three times.
 
In game two, the Maroons pulled away with five runs in their final at bat to win 11-4. Rainey led the women, hitting 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a school-record six stolen bases. She moved into fourth on the all-time stolen bases list at Roanoke with 48.
 
Down 3-2 in the fifth, Roanoke took the lead for good, scoring three runs to take a 5-3 advantage. Sara Caudle (Irvington, VA, Lancaster) RBI single scored the tying run and Meghan Weingard (Boca Raton, FL, North Broward Prep) scored the go-ahead run. Weingard would bring home another run in the sixth inning with an RBI-single.
 
Caudle's two RBI-single highlighted the five-run seventh for Roanoke. The Maroons drew three walks and three hits in the inning to pull away. RC had 12 of 15 stolen bases for the day in game two.
 
Caudle went 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs and two stolen bases.Lis Norwich (Hegins, PA, Tri-Valley) was 2-for-4 and scored a run with two stolen bases. Abigail Rexrode (Fincastle, VA, James River) (6-0) went the distance, striking out seven and scattered eight hits.
 
The women return to action this weekend, March 26-27 as they travel to Bridgewater (Sat) and Sweet Briar (Sun) in ODAC action.
