Clutch Hitting Helps Roanoke Sweep ODAC-Rival Lynchburg in Softball Action
LYNCHBURG, Va--- Roanoke swept Lynchburg, 6-4 and 12-6 in an ODAC doubleheader Saturday afternoon. The Maroons improved to 19-5, 4-2 in conference play, while the Hornets fell to 16-12, 4-8 in the ODAC.

The women began a new win streak after having their 13-game streak ended last week against Bridgewater. 

Roanoke came from behind in game one to pick up a stellar victory. Felice Lowery's (Madison Heights, VA, Lynchburg Christian) grand slam in the top of the sixth inning capped the comeback for the Maroons and gave them the victory.

RC took the lead in the top of the first on a solo homerun by Lisa Scruggs (Madison Heights, VA, Holy Cross)The Hornets responded in the bottom half of the inning on a solo shot by Meagan Fredenburg. 

Lynchburg loaded the bases on three straight singles in the bottom of the fourth inning. They took the lead when Ashley Hohenburger was hit by a pitch to drive in a run. Melanie Tinney then singled to score two more runs and give the Hornets the 4-1 advantage.

Lowery took care of the rest for Roanoke with her late inning heroics. Scruggs then hit her second homer of the contest to put the game away in the top of the seventh inning.

Katie Bruce paced the Hornets, going 3-for-3 from the plate. Fredenburg and Sarah Smith each chipped in two hits apiece.

Lowery and Scruggs led the way for Roanoke with two hits each.  Scruggs moved into a tie for fourth place on the single-season list with seven homeruns on the year.

In game two, Roanoke raced out to an early lead and never looked back in a battle of the bats. The Maroons scored four runs in both the first and second innings. In the top of the first, Hollee Warlitner (Clifton Forge, VA, Alleghany), Lowery, Meaghan Weingard, and Lis Norwich each recorded RBI's to give RC a 4-0 lead to start the game.

The Maroons posted another four spot in the top of the second before the Hornets were able to get on the scoreboard. LC scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning, highlighted by a Hohenburger two-run single. The Hornets then put three runs on the board in the third, capped off by a two-run homer by Fredenburg, to make the score, 8-5.

Roanoke added two insurance runs in the fifth, and one in both the sixth and seventh innings to put the game away. 

Rachel Gallagher finished 2-for-4, with a homerun, two RBI's, and two runs on the night for LC. Fredenburg went  2-for-3 with two RBI's.

Leona Rainey (Sandston, VA, Mills Godwin)
led the Maroons, going 4-for-5 with three runs, and two stolen bases. Weingard contributed two hits and four RBI's on the night.  Warltiner and Sara Caudle (Irvington, VA, Lancaster) added two hits and two RBI's each on the evening. Caudle hit her third homer of the year.

Abigail Rexrode (Fincastle, VA, James River)
picked up the victory for Roanoke, throwing 4.2 innings, while allowing just one run and striking out four. 

The women return to action tomorrow, April 3rd as they travel to Randolph College for another ODAC match-up. Game time is set for a 2:00 p.m. start.
