Softball Splits Pair of ODAC Doubleheaders This Weekend
Roanoke Softball went 2-2 this weekend in two ODAC doubleheaders. The Maroons record now stands at 25-9 overall and 10-6 in the ODAC. The women were swept by Eastern Mennonite on Friday with scores of 10-8 and 8-4, but rebounded in a sweep against Sweet Briar, 9-0, 12-0 Sunday afternoon.

The visiting Maroons scored first in each contest, but Eastern Mennonite unleashed a barrage of homeruns and picked up a pair of critical, come-from-behind wins Friday afternoon to help their chances of clinching the ODAC Regular Season Title.

Roanoke scored two runs in the top off two EMU errors to take the early lead. The Maroons manufactured another run in the second inning before the Royals smashed three homeruns to tie the score at 3-3.

The Lady Royals took their first lead in the fourth on two-run home run from Jessica Sullivan, but Roanoke answered with a three-run homerun from Lisa Scruggs in the top of the fifth to go back in front.

EMU's Molly Smith laced a two-run double in the fifth to regain the lead at 7-6. The Maroons fought back with a two-run rally in the sixth as the lead changed hands once again. But The Royals had the last laugh as Sullivan hit a three-run, game-winning drive over right field for her second round-tripper of the game.

Lis Norwich went 6.1 innings, striking out three, but Abigail Rexrode (8-1) suffered her first loss of the season. Roanoke out-hit EMU, 13-10, but half of the Royals hits were home runs. Five Maroons collected two hits each, with Scruggs leading the way with a double in addition to her home run and four RBI.

Roanoke came out swinging in the nightcap and grabbed a 4-1 lead on the strength of seven hits over the first three innings.

EMU scored two runs in the fourth to cut the Maroon lead to one. Brooke Hensley's three-run shot over left field highlighted a five-run fifth to put the Royals ahead for good.

Roanoke got two runners on base in the sixth and seventh inning, but Lee worked herself back out of the jams to preserve the win and sweep.

Hollee Warlitner led the Maroons offensively, going 4-for-4 while Stephanie Clark went 3-for-3 with a double. Scruggs homered and went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Alea Bier collected two hits in the game two loss.

The Maroons had no problems taking care of Sweet Briar on Sunday, outscoring the Vixens, 21-0 on the day. The women collected 15 hits with five players with at least two hits in the 12-0 game one victory.

Leona Rainey finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and three stolen bases. Alea Bier went 2-for-4 with three runs while Janie Holmes hit a solo home run to help her cause on the mound in relief. She went four innings and struck out four batters. Norwich earned the win, striking out four in three innings.

In the twin bill, Roanoke had eight hits and Sweet Briar committed five errors in the 12-0 win. The Maroons scored seven runs in the first two innings and added four more in the fifth to stop the game early.

Clark led the way, going 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and two RBI. Meghan Weingard scored two runs and drove in two while Norwich had a single and two RBI.

The women will host Randolph-Macon in their regular season finale to celebrate senior night. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
