Softball Sweeps Randolph-Macon in Regular Season Finale
SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke swept Randolph-Macon with scores of 4-1, 3-1 at the Moyer Complex Monday in the regular season finale. The Maroons finished the regular season with a 27-9 overall record, 12-6 in the ODAC. The Yellow Jackets record now stands at 26-9, 11-7 in conference play.

The Maroons scored three runs in the fifth inning and held on to knock off the Yellow Jackets in game one. Leona Rainey (Sandston, VA, Mills Godwin) led the women at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and stole her 32nd base which sets a new single-season record. Entering the post-season, Rainey is among the all-time single-season leaders at Roanoke in batting (.460) and on base percentage (.530).

Senior Lis Norwich (Hegins, PA, Tri-Valley) (7-2) pitched her seventh complete game of the spring, scattering six hits with four strikeouts. Her 18 career complete games ties her for fifth all-time at Roanoke.

Randolph-Macon got on the board first in the top of the second with a solo home run from L. Bauer. Norwich helped her cause at the plate in the third inning as she scored the first run of the game thanks to Rainey's RBI-single to tie the score at 1-1.

Hollee Warlitner (Clifton Forge, VA, Alleghany) RBI-triple sparked a two-out rally as the Maroons jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the fifth inning. Stephanie Clark (Nathalle, VA, Halifax) brought her home with an RBI-double followed by Meghan Weingard (Boca Raton, FL, North Broward Prep) RBI-double to bring in the lone freshman.

R-MC threatened with bases loaded in the sixth, but Norwich got out of the jam and held off the Yellow Jackets to preserve the victory.

Clark (4-1) pitched five innings of shutout ball with four strikeouts as the Maroons earned their fourth-straight win. Rainey led Roanoke at the plate again, going 2-for-3 while Weingard and Sara Caudle (Irvington, VA, Lancaster) collected a base hit in the victory.

The Maroons put two runs on the board in the second inning and manufactured another in the third to take a three-run advantage. Two of the three runs were scored of sacrifice flies from Katherine Kouri (Rockville, VA, Patrick Henry) and Warlitner.

The Yellow Jackets threatened again in the sixth inning as relief pitched Abigail Rexrode (Fincastle, VA, James River) found herself in a pinch with bases loaded and no outs. After a pop out to first, M. Camp reached on a fielder's choice which scored P. Smith to make it a two-run ball game. She settled down and struck out the final two batters to get out of the situation to move up to ninth on the single-season strikeouts list (78).

The Maroons will play against Virginia Wesleyan in the first round of the ODAC Tournament Thursday, April 21 at 2 p.m. at the Moyer Complex on field three.
