Leona Rainey Named Second-Team NFCA Div. III All-American
Sophomore Leona Rainey (Sandston, VA, Mills Godwin) was voted Second-Team honors on the 2011 NFCA Div. III All-American team announced this weekend. She is the only player from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) to be named All-American. It's also the first Maroon since 2003 and the fifth softball player in the 15-year history of the program to earn All-American status.
A 5-1 centerfielder, Rainey earned All-American honors for the first time in her young career. She earned her second-straight NFCA All-Atlantic Region accolade as a second-team selection after a third-team honor as a freshman. She broke her own school-record for most stolen bases in a season with an ODAC-best, 32. She has 62 career stolen bases, ranked fifth all-time at Roanoke. The two-time First-Team All-ODAC selection led the conference in batting (.455), runs (43) and on base percentage (.521). She led the Maroons in hits (55) and walks (15) in addition to six doubles and 14 RBI.
The Maroons finished 27-11 overall, 12-6 in conference play and earned a #3 seed in the ODAC Tournament. For a complete list of the 2011 NFCA Div. III All-America Team, click HERE.
