Softball Drops Three of Four in ODAC Weekend

Softball Drops Three of Four in ODAC Weekend
Roanoke College dropped three of four Old Dominion Athletic Conference games this weekend on the road in softball action.  The Maroons were swept by Virginia Wesleyan, 2-1 in both games while splitting a doubleheader to Randolph-Macon on Sunday.  The Maroons are now 15-7 overall, 3-3 in the ODAC.

Roanoke dropped a pair of 2-1 decisions to Virginia Wesleyan in Virginia Beach on Saturday.  The Maroons were tied heading into the Marlins final at bat as VWC scored in the bottom of the seventh to win both.

Leona Rainey, Caitlyn Manuel, Katherine Kouri and Rhea Schleicher all collected a hit for the Maroons, with Manuel scoring the only run in the loss.  Kouri drove in Manuel for the only run for Roanoke off a single to centerfield.

Kelly Higbie (14-5) went 6.1 innings in the complete game effort, scattering five hits and had two strikeouts.

In game two, it was déjà vu as the Maroons were up 1-0 in the third inning and allowed a run in both the sixth and seventh innings in defeat.

Alea Bier, Manuel and Felice Lowery collected a base hit while Kouri scored the only run.  Higbie (14-6) broke former NFCA All-American and 2011 Roanoke Athletic Hall of Famer, Amy Layman for the most complete games in school-history in the loss.  She went 6.2 innings with two strikeouts and allowed six hits.

R-MC (14-8. 2-2 ODAC) defeated RC for the first time in the two squads last six meetings, dating back to 2009.  The Jackets improved to 9-3 at home this year in the 6-2 game one victory.

Roanoke struck first in game one, when Bier singled in Rainey in the top of the first.  Randolph-Macon responded in the bottom half of the frame when Jarvis belted a homerun to dead center field to tie the score.

The Maroons regained the lead in the third when Rainey hit her sixth homerun of the year to right center.  The Jackets evened the score again in the fourth when Jarvis scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Michalann Camp.

Randolph-Macon took control of the contest in the fifth.  Kelly Beard started the scoring with an RBI single to right that plated Lacy Berry.  Jarvis and Laura Bauer then connected on back-to-back homeruns to give R-MC the 6-2 advantage.

Jarvis led the Jackets at the plate, finishing 3-for-3 with two homeruns, three runs, and three RBI.  The freshman now leads the ODAC in homeruns with seven.  Rainey paced the Maroons, going 3-for-3 with a homerun, a double, two runs and an RBI.

Heather Lewis improved to 9-3 on the hill this season, pitching a complete game while allowing just two earned runs.  Higbie was saddled with the loss, throwing six innings while surrendering six runs (two earned) to fall to 14-7 on the year.  It was her record-breaking 21st complete game of the year.

In game two, Roanoke got on the board first once again, taking a 2-0 advantage in the top of the fourth, capped by a Felice Lowery single.  R-MC cut the lead to one in the bottom of the inning, off an RBI single up the middle by Bauer that scored Beard.

The Maroons put the game away in the top of the seventh when they scored off a Randolph-Macon error.  Four straight singles, capped by another Lowery RBI shot sealed the Yellow Jackets fate giving the final 6-1 score.

Bauer paced the Jackets at the dish, finishing 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.  Lowery led RC with three hits and two runs batted in.

Stephanie Clark picked up her first the win for the Maroons, becoming the first pitcher other than Higbie to take the mound this season.  She threw 5.1 innings of work, allowing five hits and one earned run.  Higbie came in in relief to earn her first save of the season.

Kelly Beard took the loss for R-MC, tossing 6.1 innings on the bump, while giving up two runs (none earned) in the loss.

The women will compete against Ferrum in non-conference action at the Botetourt County Complex on Monday, April 9.  Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
