Softball Splits Lynchburg in ODAC Doubleheader
DALEVILLE --- Roanoke settled for a split with Lynchburg in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action Friday evening.  The Maroons fell 4-3 in game one before taking a 10-5 decision in the nightcap.  RC improved to 23-9 overall, 11-5 in the ODAC.

Rainey, who is ninth all-time at RC in career runs with 124, became the school's all-time stolen bases leader with 93.  She broke Crystal Berry's record, which has stood since 2004, and is third in ODAC-history with her total.  Rainey currently holds the highest batting average (.439) in a career at Roanoke.

Pitcher Kelly Higbie moved into third all-time at RC in complete games with 25, which is also a single-season record at Roanoke.  She is only three strikeouts shy of #100 for her career, the 13th Maroon to do so.

Lynchburg scored the eventual game-winning run in the sixth inning and held off the Maroons, 4-3 in the opener.  Both teams collected seven hits in this evenly matched contest.

Both teams scored three runs in the first inning and then was quiet the rest of the way before the Hornets scored in the sixth to earn their 10th conference victory.

Felice Lowery went 3-for-3 to lead the Maroons, including two doubles and an RBI.  Stephanie Clark hit a doubled and scored along with Lowery in defeat.  Caitlin Manuel had a single and two RBI.

Higbie struck out four batters in her 24th complete game for Roanoke, allowing four earned runs as she took the loss.

In the nightcap, Roanoke scored five six-inning runs en route to a 10-5 come-from-behind victory to settle for the split.

With the score 1-1 in the top of the second, the Hornets tacked on two runs to take the early advantage.  In the bottom of the fourth, Roanoke tied the score, 3-3 as Alexis Roop and Rainey scored for the Maroons.

LC grabbed the lead once again in the fifth before the Maroons tied the contest in the bottom half of that inning.  With the bases loaded and two outs, Higbie helped her cause on the mound with a two-RBI single that brought home Katherine Kouri and Clark to make it, 5-5.

Higbie got in a jam in the sixth, with two runners on and two outs, but forced a pop out to herself to end the threat.  In the bottom half of that inning, Roanoke exploded with a five-run outburst to pull the game away.

Higbie (20-8) earned the victory in relief, going the final 2.1 innings of work.  Clark went 4.2 innings, striking out six and allowed two earned runs in the no decision effort.

Roop went 2-for-4 with a run, a stolen base and an RBI while Rainey had a single, three stolen bases and a three runs.  Lowery capped a perfect day at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

The women will take on Randolph College Sunday, April 22 at the Botetourt Sports Complex.  Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
