Rainey Earns NFCA All-American Honors for Second Consecutive Year
SALEM - Roanoke College junior Leona Rainey was announced as a member of the 2012 NFCA All-American Third Team on Thursday, during the 2012 NCAA DIII Softball Championship Banquet.  This is the second consecutive year Rainey has been an All-American, boasting second-team honors in 2011.

Rainey, a Sandston, Virginia native, is batting .396 in the 2012 season.  She leads the team in runs (57), home runs (8), and stolen bases (41).  In just her junior year, Rainey holds the Roanoke career record for stolen bases with 103, 11 more than second place.  She is also ranked second nationally in stolen bases per game (1.05).  She holds the single-season records for runs scored and stolen bases, both accomplished in 2012.  With one year to play, Rainey sits at the top of the career record list for Roanoke College in batting average (.437) and on base percentage (.508).

Not only is Rainey making waves in Salem, but she is putting her name in the ODAC and NCAA record books as well. The junior is ranked third all-time in Old Dominion Athletic Conference history in stolen bases.  She is also one stolen base away from 24th all-time in NCAA history.  Over the last two seasons, Rainey has successfully stolen 66 consecutive bases, which ranks her second all-time in NCAA history.  Rainey just needs to successfully steal her next three bases to break the current record, held by Rose Kuchwara of Marywood (1996-98).

The All-American nod is not the only accolade Rainey has received this season.  She was a member of the 2012 NFCA All-Atlantic Region Team for the third consecutive year.  This year she picked up first team honors, while she was first team and third team in 2011 and 2010, respectively.  Rainey was also named to the 2012 All-ODAC First-Team as well as being a member of the 2012 ODAC All-Tournament Team.

The Maroons hold a record of 33-9 and finished conference play with a 13-5 mark.  The team is currently in the midst of the 2012 NCAA DIII Softball Championship, as they open play against Tufts University on Friday evening at 6:30 PM.
