Roanoke Softball Coaches Named 2012 NFCA Atlantic Region Coaching Staff of the Year
The Roanoke College Softball coaching staff has been named 2012 NFCA Atlantic Region Coaching Staff of the Year.  Head Coach Mike Mitchell and Assistant Coaches Barry Wood, Russell Gaddy and Kelsey Schmitt will be honored Saturday, December 1st, at the NFCA Coaching Staff of the Year Brunch at the 2012 NFCA National Convention in Orlando, FL.

The Maroons finished the 2012 season with a record of 35-11 and 13-5 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.  Coach Mitchell and the Roanoke coaching staff led just 12 players to a fourth place finish in the 2012 NCAA Softball Championships.  Roanoke also won its first ODAC Championship since the 2006 season.

Mike Mitchell
Mitchell just finished his fourth year as head coach of the Roanoke College softball team.  In his four seasons, he has compiled a record of 116-42 (50-22 ODAC).  Mitchell also led the Maroons to its 10th 30-plus win season, including the fourth place finish in the NCAA Championships in 2012.  He has over 20 years of coaching experience at both the collegiate and high school level.

Russell Gaddy
Gaddy has focused his attention on the Maroon outfielders during his time at Roanoke College.  He is also responsible for helping recruit and scout future players. This is not the first time Gaddy has helped coach the Maroons to the NCAA Tournament as he was on the Roanoke coaching staff when the team won ODAC championships in 2004 and 2005.

Barry Wood
Wood serves as the hitting coach for the Maroons squad.  He was also a member of the coaching staff that went to the NCAA Tournament in 2004-05.  Wood has been a youth coach in the Roanoke Valley for the past 28 years, the last 20 of which he has been involved with softball.  He was one of the founders of the ASA Scrappers, which has developed some of the top softball talent to come out of the area.

Kelsey Schmitt
Schmitt completed her first year on the coaching staff with a trip to the NCAA Championships.  She assisted with player development, practice planning, scouting and recruiting.  Schmitt was previously a catcher for Virginia Tech and went to four-straight NCAA Regional appearances, two Super Regional appearances and one College World Series appearance.
