#5 Maroons Go 1-1 For Second Consecutive Day against Birmingham Southern and #13 Emory
ATLANTA, GA – For the second day in a row, the #5 ranked Roanoke College softball team went 1-1.  The Maroons (6-2) defeated Birmingham Southern 12-10, while falling to #13 ranked Emory University 8-0 in five innings.
 
In the first matchup of the day, Birmingham Southern (5-4) got on the board first, in the bottom of the first inning as Danielle Ruc scored on an error.  The Cougars had a 1-0 lead through the first two innings.  The Maroons took the lead in the top of the third inning, as Alea Bier crossed the plate after a Hollee Warlitner triple.  The next batter, Stephanie Clark, hit an RBI single plating Warlitner for the Maroons to take the 2-1 lead in the top of the third.
 
The Cougars quickly regained the advantage in the bottom of the third inning.  Birmingham Southern piled on six runs on five hits to gain a 7-2 advantage over the Maroons.  However, Roanoke wasn't out of the contest yet.  With two outs, Meghan Weingard singled, Morgan Wood walked and Rhea Schleicher got a single to load the bases.  The next two batters walked, plating two runs and pulling within three, 7-4.  Warlitner then hit a three RBI triple, to tie the game at 7-7 after the top of the fourth.
 
The Maroons tacked on more runs in the top of the sixth inning.   Schleicher got things started for the Maroons with a single, followed by an RBI triple from Leona Rainey.  Beir followed with an RBI single, plating Rainey.  With the bases loaded, Caitlyn Manual hit an RBI single, scoring Bier.  The Maroons followed with an RBI hit-by-pitch and an RBI sacrifice fly, to score the fourth and fifth run of the inning.  After the top of the sixth, Roanoke led 12-7.  The Cougars scored three more runs over the next two innings, as Roanoke defeated Birmingham Southern 12-10 in non-conference play.
 
Four different Maroons compiled two hits each against Birmingham Southern.  Alea Bier and Hollee Warlitner finished the game with three runs each, while Leona Rainey tallied two.  Stephanie Clark tallied four RBIs, followed by Warlitner with three.  Stephanie Clark picked up the win for Roanoke, only giving up three runs off seven hits, and striking out three.
 
Five Panthers finished the game with two hits each, while Danielle Rucker and Elizabeth Ballew tallied two RBIs apiece.  Brittany Berkopec and Deanna Creps crossed the plate twice for Birmingham Southern.  Bethany Fronk earned the loss giving up 12 runs off 13 hits, and striking out three.
 
In the second game of the day, the #5 ranked Maroons had a tougher time against #13 Emory University (16-0).  The Eagles first four runners reached base including Ally Kersthold who hit an RBI single, as well as Megan Light who singled for two RBIs.  After the first inning, Emory had a 3-0 lead over Roanoke.  The Maroons held the Eagles scoreless for the next two innings, until the bottom of the fourth inning, where Emory scored one run.
 
In the bottom of the fifth, the Eagles reached base on their first three batters, with Meaghan Schultz who hit a two RBI single.  Scharff hit an RBI single of her own, followed by Lauren Gorodetsky reaching on an error, scoring Courtney Sugihara, giving Emory an 8-0 lead after five innings for the Emory win.
 
Caitlin Manuel led the Maroons in hits with two, while Bier, Warlitner and Clark had one each.  Clark was credited with the loss on the mound, giving up seven runs and striking out three.
 
Alyssa Pollard led the Eagles in hitting, going 3-3 on the afternoon.  Meagan Light and Meaghan Schults finished the game with two RBIs each, while Courtney Sugihara led the team with two runs scored.  Amanda Kardys was credited with the win, giving up five hits and striking out four.
 
The Maroons return to action on March 5-6 as they play in the Rebel Games in Orlando, Florida.  Their first game will take place at 11:00 AM on March 5th against Muskingum University.
