#23 Maroons Take Two Over Guilford on Wednesday Night in ODAC Opener
SALEM – The #23 ranked Roanoke College softball team defeated Guilford College in double-header Old Dominion Athletic Conference action on Wednesday.  The Maroons are now 11-3, 2-0 ODAC, while the Quakers now have a record of 9-3, and are 0-2 in ODAC play.
 
The Quakers got an early jump on the #23 ranked Maroons, as Brittany Donathan hit a 2 RBI double to left field, scoring Allie Nicholson and Cynthia Hayes.  Rachel Howard followed with a single that allowed Sarah Cutright to cross the plate and take a 3-0 lead.   The Maroons answered with three runs of their own, as Alea Bier hit an RBI single, plating Leona Rainey, while Stephanie Clark hit a two run home run, to tie the game at 3-3 after just one inning.
 
Roanoke continued the scoring, as Rhea Schleicher hit a two run home run of her own, giving Roanoke a 5-3 lead after the second inning.  The Quakers got in a home run in the top of the third as Casey Sneed sent one over the fence, pulling within one, 5-4.  The Maroons scored one run over each of the next three innings, capped off by a home run from Alexis Roop, giving Roanoke the 9-4 win in the first contest.
 
Alea Bier led the Maroons in hitting, going 2-3, with two RBIs and one run scored.  Stephanie Clark led the team with two runs scord and two RBIs, while Rhea Schleicher also finished with two runs and two RBIs.  Kelly Higbie (5-2) picked up the victory, giving up four runs off eight hits, striking out two.
 
Cynthia Hayes led the Quakers in hitting in the first game, going 2-4 on the afternoon.  Brittany Donathan finished the contest with a team-high two RBIs.  Maggie Shaffer (1-2) was tabbed with the loss, giving up seven runs off five hits, walking five and striking out four.
 
In the second game, the teams were tied at 1-1 through the first three innings.  The Maroons created separation during the fourth inning as Morgan Wood hit her first career home run, with a two RBI blast.  Rainey and Schleicher also crossed the plate  in the fourth inning, capitalizing on an error.  After four, Roanoke held a 5-1 lead.  The Quakers scored two runs in each of the next two innings, tying the game at five after the top of the sixth inning.  In the bottom of the sixth, Roanoke put four more runs on the board after Bier, Hollee Warlitner and Clark each had RBI singles, giving the Maroons a 9-5 lead after six.
 
The Quakers rallied in the top of the seventh, as Autumn Yoder hit an RBI single scoring Nicholson.  Guilford then loaded the bases, followed by a three RBI double, tying the game at 9-9, entering the bottom of the ninth.  As the leadoff batter, Wood hit a walkoff home run, capping the Maroons 10-9 victory over Guilford.
 
Morgan Wood led the team in hitting, going 3-4 on the evening, with two runs scored, three RBIs and two home runs.  Leona Rainey scored a team-high three runs in the game.  Stephanie Clark (6-1) pitched a complete game victory, striking out four.
 
Allie Nicholson and Autumn Yoder topped the Quakers, each hitting 3-4 on the night.  Cynthia Hayes finished with a game high four RBIs, while Yoder tallied three.  Calli Pastor (2-1) earned the loss, giving up 10 runs off nine hits, while striking out six.
 
The Maroons take part in the Roanoke Valley College Softball Bash on Friday-Saturday, March 15-16.  Their first contest begins at 2:00 PM at the Botetourt Complex.
