Softball Goes 1-1 in First Day of Roanoke Valley Bash
TROUTVILLE – The #23 ranked Roanoke College softball team split a pair of contests in the opening day of the Roanoke Valley Softball Bash on Friday.  The Maroons now have a record of 12-4 after defeating Gettysburg College 17-5, and falling to Mount Aloysius College 4-2 in the opening game.
 
The Mounties of Mount Aloysius (7-3) jumped out to an early lead in the first game of the day.  With the bases loaded, the Mounties scored three runs, one from a walk and another two from a single by Lindsy Sammarco.  After the first inning, Mt. Aloysius led 3-0.  The Mounties scored one more run after a double that plated Jalisa Westover.  Through two innings, they took a 4-0 lead.
 
The Maroons tried to rally in the top of the seventh inning, as Kelly Higbie got the ball rolling with an RBI single that scored Morgan Wood.  Alexis Roop followed with an RBI double that plated Caitlin Manuel.  However those would be the only two runs that the Maroons would score as they fell, 4-2 to Mt. Aloysius.
 
Caitlin Manuel led the team with two hits, while Leona Rainey, Kelly Higbie and Alexis Roop each had one hit.  Higbie took the loss in the contest, giving up four runs off three hits.
 
The Mounties only tallied three hits that scored the four winning runs.  Lindsy Sammarco finished the game with a team-high two RBIs.  Kelsey Ickes (3-0) picked up the victory after giving up two runs of five hits, also striking out five.
 
The Maroons found the hot bats in the second game of the day against Gettysburg College.  After scoring two runs in the first inning, and leading 2-1 after the frame, Roanoke really turned things on.  In the bottom of the second, the Maroons had four RBI base hits, as Rainey, Bier, Hollee Warilitner and Manuel all picked up hits.  In the bottom of the second, Roanoke led 7-1.  After Gettysburg scored one run in the top fo the third, Roanoke answered with six more in the bottom of the third.  Half of the runs came off of a three-RBI home run by Stephanie Clark, while Dehart, Rainey and Warlitner completed the make-shift cycle, hitting an RBI triple, single and double, respectively.
 
The Maroons final scoring inning came in the bottom of the fourth as they piled on four more runs.  Rainey scored on a passed ball, while Alexis Roop hit an RBI single, and Romano hit a two RBI single as well.  Through four innings, Roanoke led 17-5.  The Bullets only scored one more run in the game as Ronaoke won 17-6 in five innings.
 
Leona Rainey, Alea Bier and Katie Romano each finished the game with three hits apiece.  Rainey and Bier also crossed the plate a team-high three times.  Stephanie Clark finished the game with a game-high five RBIs.  Ashley Crouch earned her first pitching win of the year after throwing 3.1 innings, giving up five runs and striking out three.
 
Ashley Iannone led the Bullets in hitting, going 3-4 on the afternoon.  Melissa Tighe and Joy Hallfors finished the contest with two runs each.  Michelle Fox (2-2) earned the loss, giving up 12 runs on 13 hits.
 
The Maroons return to action on Saturday, March 16th as they play in three contests.  Their first game begins at 11:00 AM as they face off against Castleton College.
