#12 Softball Blanks Randolph in Double Header
LYNCHBURG – The #12 Roanoke College softball team swept a pair of games from Randolph College on the road on Saturday, winning 6-0 and 2-0.  The Maroons now have a record of 24-5; 12-0 in the ODAC, while the WildCats are 23-13; 6-10 in ODAC play.

Each team held the other scoreless for the first four innings of contest number one.  But as the top of the fifth inning rolled around, Roanoke found its groove.  Kelly Higbie hit an RBI single, plating Leona Rainey to score the first run of the game.  Stephanie Clark followed with an RBI single, bringing around Higbie from second.  Kayla Dehart hit an RBI single, but as an outfielder made an error on the play, it allowed the already loaded bases to be cleared, plating three more runs.  By the end of the fifth inning, the Maroons held a 5-0 lead.

In the top of the sixth, Rainey hit a solo home run, taking a 6-0 advantage for the Maroons that would hold for the remainder of the contest.

Leona Rainey led the team in hits, going 3-4 while also scoring a team high two runs.  Four other Maroons crossed the plate, while Rainey, Higbie, Clark and Kayla Dehart each had one RBI.  Clark (11-1) also picked up the win, pitching a complete game shutout, giving up four runs and striking out two.

Randolph had four different players with one hit each.  Logan Carter (9-8) was tabbed with the loss, giving up six runs off 11 hits and striking out four.

In the second game, runs were a little harder to come by for the Maroons.  Alea Bier hit an RBI double in the first, scoring Rainey for her fourth run of the day.  Both teams remained scoreless for the next five innings until Kelly Higbie reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Hollee Warlitner to score.  Roanoke's 2-0 lead would prove to be the final score of the game as the Maroons took two games from Randolph College.

The Maroons finished with seven hits, as Bier and Meghan Weingard finished with two hits each.  Bier and Higbie finished with one RBI to their credit as well.  Higbie (11-4) picked up the win pitching six innings, giving up three hits and striking out two.  Ashley Crouch picked up the save pitching one inning.

The WildCats finished the game with three players having one hit each (Brittany Willingham, Brittney Via and Erin Wehrhan).  Kristen Hutchison (10-4) was credited with the loss, giving up one run off four hits and striking out two.

The Maroons return to action on Sunday, April 14th as they travel to face #13 Lynchburg College.  That contest is scheduled for a 1:30 PM first pitch.
