#12 Maroons Claim Two Over Ferrum on Tuesday
FERRUM – The #12 ranked Roanoke College softball team took two games from Ferrum College on Tuesday Evening.  The Maroons now have a record of 27-5; while the Panthers currently sit with a mark of 34-12.
 
The first game of the evening proved to be a high scoring affair between the two teams.  Alea Bier got the first runs on the board with a two RBI home run, plating Leona Rainey in the process.  Over the next two innings, the Maroons scored two more runs, taking a 3-0 lead through the end of the second inning.  Ferrum cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the third after a two RBI double to right field, by Sadie Wallace.
 
The Maroons went back on the offensive in the top of the fourth, as Stephanie Clark hit a two RBI single, scoring Rainey and Rhea Schleicher.  In the to of the fifth, Rainey and Hollee Warlitner each had RBI hits, giving the Maroons a 9-2 lead through five innings.  Roanoke capped their scoring in the top of the sixth as Alexis Roop hit a solo home run, scoring the Maroons 10th run.
 
The Panthers made a run at the Maroons in the bottom of the sixth, as Rachel Shumaker and Shelbie Hall each had RBI hits, while Suzanne Plasters had an sacrifice fly ball that plated a run. However, they couldn't catch the Maroons as Roanoke won 10-5 in the first game.
 
Leona Rainey and Alea Bier led the team in hitting going 3-4 each.  Three different Maroons finished the contest with two RBIs each.  Rainey also finished the game with a game high three runs.  Kelly Higbie was tabbed with the win, pitching 6.1 innings, giving up five runs off 11 hits and striking out four.
 
Shelbie Hall and Sadie Wallace led the Panthers in the first game, putting up two hits each in the game.  Wallace also led the team in RBIs with two.  Rachel Shumaker was tabbed with the loss, only pitching one inning, giving up three runs off four hits.
 
In the second game of the day, it only took one run to put away the contest.  Both teams remained scoreless through the first five innings of play, until the Maroons struck in the top of the sixth.  Rhea Schleicher led off the inning with a single to left field.  Two batters later, Caitlin Manuel grounded out to first, which allowed Schleicher to score the eventual winning run.
 
The Maroons only put together five hits in the second game, as there were five different hits from five different players.  Caitlin Manuel had the Maroons lone RBI in the contest.  Kelly Higbie pitched a complete game shutout, only giving up two hits and striking out five.
 
The Panthers only had two hits in the second game, one from Suzanne Plasters and one from Kylene Culler.  Kaitlyn Culler was tabbed with the loss, giving up one run off five hits and striking out five.
 
The Maroons return to action on Saturday, April 20th as the Maroons take on Virginia Wesleyan.  That matchup, which will also serve as Senior Day for the Maroons, is slated for a 1:00 PM first pitch.
