Maroons Win First, Fall in Second Game of ODAC Softball Tournament
SALEM – In the opening day of the 2013 ODAC Softball Tournament, Roanoke College went 1-1 on the day, defeating Shenandoah University. 7-6 in eight innings, but falling 2-1 to #19 ranked Lynchburg College.  The Maroons advance to tomorrow's games with a record of 30-11.
 
With the loss in the second game of the day for Roanoke, the Maroons will take on Bridgewater College in a must-win game for both teams.  That contest will take place on field one in the Moyer Complex with a first pitch time of 11:00 AM.  The winner of that game will go on to play the winner of Shenandoah vs Randolph-Macon with a start time of 5:00 PM on Saturday.
 
Roanoke struck first in the first game of the ODAC Tournament, as they put one run on the board in the bottom of the second.  With the bases loaded, Rhea Schleicher took a walk, allowing Alexis Roop to cross the plate, and give the Maroons a 1-0 lead.
 
Shenandoah rallied in the top of the fourth inning to get a jump on the Maroons.  Brady, Wilson and Guepe all hit RBI singles to score runs, while McCabe walked for an RBI and Bradley popped up with a sacrifice fly.  Through the top of the fourth inning, the Hornets were able to get five runs to cross the plate to take the 5-1 advantage over the Maroons.  However the Maroons were able to answer in the bottom of the inning.  Alea Bier hit a two RBI single through the right side, plating Schleicher and Meghan Weingard, pulling within two.  Stephanie Clark hit an RBI single through the left side to score Leona Rainey.  Finally Alexis Roop hit a single to the outfield, Bringing home Bier and tying the game at 5-5 through four innings.
 
The usual seven innings couldn't hold this contest, so the game was extended through the eighth.  In a softball game that goes into extra innings, starting with the eighth inning teams begin with a runner already on second base.  Shenandoah's Kondzielawa hit a ground out to the short stop, but allowed Morgan Coble to score to put the Hornets up by one, 6-5.
 
Roanoke started the eighth inning with Bier reaching on a fielder's choice, bringing home Schleicher to tie the game at 6-6.  The very next batter, Clark, hit a single up the middle to score Rainey, and capture the first game of the ODAC tournament, 7-6.
 
Clark led the team in hitting going 3-5 on the afternoon, followed by six different players with one hits each. Bier led the team in RBIs with three, followed by Clark who had two.  Kelly Higbie picked up the win, pitching 4.2 innings, only giving up one run off four hits, striking out two.
 
Denise Mitchell and Kimberly Brady led the team in batting with two hits each.  Six different Hornets finished the game with one RBI each.  Jordan Wolford was tabbed with the loss, pitching four innings, giving up four runs off seven hits, striking out three.
 
In Roanoke's game against Lynchburg in the ODAC Tournament, both teams scored one run each in the second inning.  After a wild pitch, Lynchburg's Amber Ingram crossed the plate to take the 1-0 lead.  The Maroons answered in the bottom of the inning, as Caitlin Manuel hit an RBI single to right field, allowing Hollee Warlitner to score, tying the game at 1-1.
 
Lynchburg jumped on the board again in the top of the fourth inning.  Michela Munday hit an RBI single up the middle, bringing around Danielle Powell from second and taking a 2-1 lead.  In the bottom of the seventh, the Maroons had one final chance to score.  After Higbie hit a single through the left side, Katie Romano relieved Higbie on the base path.  Meghan Weingard hit a double to right center field, allowing Romano to round third base and head home, but was thrown out from second.  #19 ranked Lynchburg College picked up the 2-1 win over the Maroons in the night game.
 
Hollee Warlitner led the Maroons in hitting for the contest, going 2-3 on the afternoon with one run scored.  Caitlin Manuel had the team's only RBI, going 1 for 3 in the game.  Kelly Higbie picked up the loss, giving up two runs off four hits, striking out two in the complete game effort.
 
Lynchburg had four different players with one hit each on the day.  Danielle Powell and Amber Ingram finished with one run each on the day, while Michaela Munday had the team's lone RBI.  Elizabeth Fioretti had the complete game victory, giving up one run off seven hits, striking out six.
 
The Maroons play on Saturday, April 27th at 11:00 AM against Bridgewater College.  This is a must-win game for either team, as the loser of the contest is eliminated from the tournament.
